I chatted with a mate about my Taino heritage because he's also Taino and he discovered I'm not just Taino, but Afro - Taino according to my DNA results. I honestly never knew this. I knew my DNA results had stuff like the Congo, Northern Africa, Indigenous South American, and so on. But I didn't know what that meant.

I want to know more about where I came from, what my people and culture was like. I want to understand my history better.

I was curious if there was anyone who's also Afro - Taino who might be able to help guide me on where to look? Who to talk to, etc.

I'm still learning what it means to be Taino, but now I want to know what it means to be Afro - Taino. I want to know what happened to my people, etc. There's so much more stuff I want to know I honestly don't know where to even start.

I only have 2,000 characters so if you want to read this in full please check out my Tumblr down below. This is part 2 of me talking about Taino people and Christopher Columbus.

You see when Chrisdick came over, we welcomed him.

We had no idea who these people were, we had no reason to be hostile. Why did we gave them silver and gold? We had no need for it. We lived off the island, we hunt, swam, slept outside, we had no desire for silver and gold. We didn’t had an economy and we didn’t had the tools to make the types of weapons or armour the Spaniards had so we just gave them the stuff.

Not only did we gave them silver and gold, we also gave them our woman and virgins. It was to help with relations. Our woman would go with them to this new land, and return us with information, new families, and wonders of the outside...that never happened. Giving the Spaniards silver, gold, and woman, was all in the hopes they would give us something in return, but the only thing they gave was diseases that made everyone sick. They took, and took, and took, and then they left.

When we refused to give them anymore, that’s when things got violent. They pillage our village’s, killed the strongest and told the weak to go digging for more silver and gold. That was when the slavery began, when we didn’t want to give anymore, they decided to take instead.

How could we stop them? They had guns and we had spears and arrows. They made us sick and we couldn’t fight back. They already won the war before it started.

Why do you think Puerto Rico is called Puerto Rico? It translates to “Port of Riches” because of how rich it made the Spaniards. Once they were done being rich and taking from our land, they took us instead so we could work for them. An estimated 7-8 million Taino people died in just a few decades.

Did you know Puerto Rican Independence leader Ramón Emeterio Betánces wrote a novel called Los dos indios (The 2 Indians) in 1852? The novel details the life of 2 Taíno chiefs as they resist the Spanish invasion. Showing 2 strategies, the conciliatory and the militant. Betánces wanted to show that the Taíno spirit against the Spanish lived within Puerto Ricans independentists in his time. 16 years later, Betánces led the Grito de Lares, to free Puerto Rico.

Google Bard AI is a thing and it's as bad as you think. I asked it if the Taino people are around today and the response I got was "The Taíno people are not alive today as a distinct ethnic group."

First of all, yes we are alive, but then it goes on to say that those who "claim" to be Taino are actually "Neo-Taino" which first of all. I've been engaging with the Taino community and I never once heard of Neo-Taino before.

Bard AI also goes on to say this.

"Some scholars argue that the Neo-Taíno movement is not a legitimate continuation of Taíno culture, but rather a kind of cultural appropriation. They argue that the Neo-Taínos do not have a clear connection to the Taíno people, and that they are often more interested in creating a new identity than in preserving Taíno culture."

First of all, fuck you Bard AI, white scholars don't get to decide if we're alive or not, we're alive! We're Taino!

When I asked it for it's links, were is it getting it's information from I received this.

"I'm not able to help with that, as I'm only a language model."

Which is just a chef kiss response. Something created by Google can't go through the internet to give me links for its bullshit questions.

Forgot to mention it also said this. "Ultimately, the question of whether or not the Neo-Taíno claim is valid is a complex one. There is no easy answer, and there are valid arguments to be made on both sides."

There's no both side, we're alive, our culture is only dying because of responses like this that ignores our existence. If people just listened to us, they would see we've been here all the time.

You can submit feedback to Bard AI and maybe they'll fix it, but as of right now, the Taino people don't exist, but "Neo-Taino's" do and even that's up for debate.

We do exist, and we're here to stay. Spread our name across the ocean and the sea. When you look at us tell me what do you see? Taino and you better believe.

“From an ancient Taíno perspective, the hurakan was an expression of the fury of Guabancex, mistress of violent churnings of wind and rain, and one of the manifestations of Atabey (the consciousness of Mother Earth). Guabancex is chaos incarnate; yet, her power was not seen as merely a destructive force of death, but part of a transformational cycle leading to new life and balance.”

“Hurricane” comes from the Taíno word “Huricán”, the Carib god who represents Guavava & Coatrische, the 2 messengers of Guabancex, the Taíno deity of wind. They controlled tempests and floods, and “accounts … show that offerings were made to her idol to appease [her] wrath, in order to avert tempests [from destroying the crops] rather than to bring rain.” (fr. “An Antillean Statuette, with Notes on West Indian Religious Beliefs”, J. Walter Fewkes)

Shout out to the only representation I ever see of Puerto Rico in Australia. A board game of how to be a coloniser.

No joke, you can play as a white settler, or a governor, but if those don't tickle your fancy you can always be a trader. Plus did you know Christopher Columbus "discovered" Puerto Rico?

I kind of want to see what's in these boxes just to see how bad it gets but I'm not going to pay with my actual money.

The Golden Flower: A Taíno Myth from Puerto Rico by Nina Jaffe, illustrated by Enrique O. Sanchez, is a children's book that tells the creation story of Boriquén (present-day Puerto Rico) and how a golden flower brought water to the world.

I want it to be clear, I don't know Steven Gonzalez Monserrate personally but I did discovered he's a brother and because of that, I gotta give him a shout out.

While I can't find him claiming he's Taíno directly. He writes in the genre known as indigenous futurism, but more specifically, Taíno-futurism. He also say's he's from Borikén, which is the Taíno word for what is now known as Puerto Rico. So yea, safe to say he's Taíno.

He's done short fiction and has a book called Sordidez which you can find here: stelliform.press/index.php/pro

The book features a trans man in near-future Puerto Rico, and oh yeah, Steven is queer as well (his words)

If you're looking for representation in your reading list, and want to read things from different communities. Don't pass up on Steven for he's indigenous, and part of the LGBTQ+ community, and he's Taíno which makes him cool.

Like I said, I don't personally know him, I haven't read his book, but we Taíno got to stick together and from the surface I think he's pretty neat.

Also, make sure to give him a follow as well. @cloudanthro

So uh, I don't really know where to upload my short stories that I'll make since there a bit to long to just dump in a giant post so for now...I guess I'll just upload them on my Tumblr? People still use Tumblr right?

Anyway, so what's my short little story is about? It's about a guy named Blake who enjoy's reading old and forgotten stories so much that he bought a store so he can have all of the forgotten books in the world.

An elder from the Taino community came over to said that none of his stories (the Taino) are in the store and throughout the story Blake discovers who the Taino are and why he never heard of them.

So, yeah...that's the story. If you know of a better place where I can upload my short stories that'll be great lol Anyway, hope you like it!

Regarding the : "the Spanish were so thorough in the horrors they visited upon the Indigenous population that there aren’t really survivors around to speak for a separate identity" is a myth. The best-known indigenous community of the islands, the , were devastated but not eliminated by spanish colonialism. The , who were mainly genocided by the british, are also still around, with a government-sanctioned reservation on Waitu'kubuli (dominica) & an active diaspora. Some survivors of these genocides assimilated, but there are revival movements among descendants. Other survivors created new indigenous communities like the . Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean weren't "completely" eliminated any more than those of the amerikan mainlands were—& there's always been much movement of peoples between mainland & islands.

@Cy_Cyborg I'm also taking inspiration from my Taino culture because I want to include my indigenous background in this story. I'm currently in talk with the Taino community to see what I can add or change.

This animal is based off the Cuban McCaw who is no longer around today as they went extinct around the 1800s
