“Months after Cyclone Gabrielle smashed Tairāwhiti [Gisborne, New Zealand], locals are still cleaning up the damage. The Side Eye travels to the erosion-prone region to meet the people asking hard questions about a plan for the future…”

Here's some local flavour from the Gizzy Herald. Good-humoured people queuing at an ATM for cash to buy food, petrol and in at least one case, "a bit of weed for the weekend." Priorities.

i still haven't heard from my parents in #Gisborne #Tairawhiti - i'm sure they're fine, just technologically inept, but this is still scary. four days no contact.
wish i've heard from anyone back home who could do a welfare check but no dice
General update: there's been widespread disruption, destruction and damage and that disruption may continue for some time. Please keep an eye on your local authorities info pages for the most up to date info. Many links upthread.
Stuff & RNZ also have liveblogs & RNZ have a text only info page for thos in #Piha, #Coromandel, #HawkesBay & #Gisborne #Tairāwhiti.
As always, safety first. Don't wait for an order to evacuate if you feel unsafe. Take extreme care as so many roads are munted.

HMNZS Manawanui expected to arrive at first light in Gisborne, delivering water supplies to small communities on its way
Gisborne's water supply is in crisis and businesses have been asked to stop all water use. Conserve water.
Many power outages/people without. If you have power, conserve it.
No road access in or out. No internet or cellphone coverage.
There is a lot of infrastructure damage and they're working as best and fast as they can to restore things.
A reminder once again ICYMI that RNZ have a text only (no going to fb!) updates page for #Tairawhiti #Coromandel and #HawkesBay all in onr place. This is regularly updated and super useful.

#Tairawhiti CDEM update:
#Gisborne city, continue to conserve water
Stay out of floodwaters
Few updates I can see this morning (I may not have everything) but we know this region has been really slammed & with power & comms outages on top of that.
Keep an eye on local authority updates as and when can and please take care. If you have info you'd like us to share @ me and I will add it to the thread.
Looking at Metservice updates, we can see #CycloneGabrielle is moving further offshore & heading east.
#Auckland has the only red warning - for wind
The entire east coast of the north island sees orange rain warnings, with a strong wind watch in #Tairāwhiti as well.
There’s heavy swells expected, especially towards the Wairarapa, as well.
Eastern #Marlborough joins in the Orange rain warning, and #Otautahi #Christchurch is on a rain watch overnight.
This will help clean up& rescue a lot
