Winds from #Typhoon #Haikui were strong enough to drag toppled motorcycles several meters on asphalt in #Taitung.

#Typhoon #Haikui has come and gone. It made #landfall in #Taitung County, #Taiwan, at 15:40, packing winds up to 105kts/121mph/194kph, along with heavy rain. It exited from #Kaohsiung into the sea at 20:00.

During its 5-hour traversal across the island, it caused 355 road-blocking downed trees, 44 injuries, 31 areas of flooding, power outage for 120k units, and water outage for 5k units.

Work and school is suspended in 14 counties and municipalities on Monday.

@kitchen The East Coast of #Taiwan is true gem. I'm waiting for the day that a train tunnel is built, connecting Taichung to Hualien. That would shorten the trip to the East Coast massively.

This little cafe in #Taitung really loved Vespas (specifically Vespas, it would seem) and elephants.

The whole vibe of #Taitung and seemingly the east coast in general is slow down, relax, so the next few riding days are probably going to be short and stay at nice comfy places.

Bike ride from #Hualien to #Taitung

Important:
a) avoid weekends, way too much traffic. On weekdays it's much better
b) stop at every convenience store to restock on water and snacks. Those stores are not as common on the East Coast as villages are further apart as well.

NB I took a train from Taipei to Hualien to shorten the distance and avoid lots of tunnels.

- change to road 64 to Ruisui at New Changhong Bridge

I particularly like the iced and (lime-)flavoured, refreshing green teas to survive the hot weather in #Taiwan. First got a taste for it back in March 2019 in #Taitung at Mr.Rich. The variety with passion fruit at #Taipei's Sip la Mode was particularly delicious.
My go-to drink after the morning's coffee and before the beers in the evenings, really.
