The downside is that you need a trustworthy operator then. #Taler deems banks adequate, and to be fair its design does limit the actual risk exposure to said trusted party quite a bit (basically nothing besides #privacy coins provide better privacy anyway) so it might well be fine (provided we can actually get them to actually do so, as few seem to have any interest at the moment).

@Ooops @heiseonline Der Wirtschaft ist alles recht mit dem sich Geld verdienen lässt und die Politik hat durchaus den Willen Open Source einzusetzen. Da sehe ich das Problem eher beim fehlendem KnowHow. Mal schaun vielleicht wird sich ja der digitale Euro an #Taler anlehnen.

No decisionmaker or potential profiter want to hear about anonymity as control is what they're after. This is why I fear #Taler will never take off.

For a majority user base,
'Privacy' nowadays means entrusting your data to BigCorp in the hope they won't make it available to public. This is perceived as an acceptable tradeoff for convenience.

Need to reeducate several generations to understand that personal data can only be as private as you keep full ownership of it.

Auch beim digitalen #Euro geht es darum, Abhängigkeiten (und Willkür) von Privatunternehmen und anderen Staaten zu vermeiden und die Privatsphäre zu wahren.

@sebmeineck @netzpolitik_feed GNU #Taler bringt übrigens so ganz nebenbei eine Möglichkeit zur Altersverifizierung mit. Die Gegenseite sieht dann lediglich binär ob der Besitzer eines Wallet volljährig ist oder nicht.

Bundesrat sieht in allgemein zugänglichem Zentralbankgeld für die Schweiz gegenwärtig keinen Zusatznutzen.

Today I learn about #RetributeMe (https://retribute.me) that comes from the folks at @funkwhale if I understood correctly.

The idea looks quite nice, with the objective of making a standard for financial support. I was wondering how this relates to other initiatives like the #FEP on payment links (https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/fep-0ea0-payment-links/3121/9) or tools like GNU #Taler.

@littlesnitch It is critical to support alternatives to monopolistic payment processors. It is intolerable having the sole means of exchange subject to the whims/mores of a handful of US corporations. Why are direct bank transfers (eg SEPA) so rarely an option?

Hey @BrodieOnLinux have you ever talked about #Taler?
It's a FOSS Standard for Payments and can scale even bigger than Visa or Paypal, but of course it would need adoption from Banks etc

@nus It's overcomplicated, inefficient and absurdly wasteful for something that not only should be simpler, but actually has a demonstrable currently functional rival technology to point at in #GNUTaler which has none of those issues.

Except that no one serves as a #Taler exchange and no one supports Taler.

And I mean wasteful in ways monetary, energetic, time-related & environmental.

@dekkzz76 Some #monero wallet I haven't checked in a long while.

I basically wanted some anonymous donation box and unfortunately... #cryptocurrencies are basically the only option for that (with privacy coins as the only non-useless ones).

Which sucks but that's how things go when modern governments (and payment processors) seem hellbent on implementing #MassSurveillance police states.

I'd much rather be using #GNUTaler but no one seems to be supporting it.

Bardzo intuicyjny koncept, wypłacamy z bankomatu lub banku pieniądze w dowolnej walucie do portfela np w telefonie czy laptopie, a potem nimi wygodnie płacimy skanując kody QR, tagi NFC lub z konta na konto.

Ma działać bez jednego centralnego punktu i bez blockchaina, niezależnie od waluty.
Wszystko open source i na tyle otwarte by pozwalało za pomocą prostych bibliotek przyjmować płatności nawet na Raspberry Pi bez dziesiątek firm przetwarzających.

Taka otwarta alternatywa dla Visa/MasterCard, z cyfrowym portfelem zamiast karty, anonimowe dla kupującego i proste w implementacji.
