MEMORY LANE | Dozens of #Journalists’ #iPhones #Hacked with #NSO ‘#ZERO_CLICK’ #spyware, says #Citizen_Lab

The spyware was #silently_delivered, likely over #iMessage.

NSO #sells governments and nation states #access to its #Pegasus_spyware as a #prepackaged service by providing the #infrastructure and the #exploits needed to launch the spyware against the customer’s #targets.

But the spyware maker has repeatedly #distanced itself from what its customers do and has said it does not know who its customers target. Some of NSO’s known customers include #authoritarian_regimes.

#Saudi_Arabia allegedly used the #surveillance technology to spy on the #communications of columnist #Jamal_Khashoggi shortly before his murder, which U.S. intelligence concluded was likely ordered by the kingdom’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince #Mohammed_bin_Salman.

Citizen Lab said it also found #evidence that #Dridi, a journalist at Arabic television station #Al_Araby in #London, had fallen #victim to a zero-click #attack. The researchers said Dridi was likely targeted by the #UAE_government.

In a phone call, Dridi told TechCrunch that her phone may have been targeted because of her close association to a person of interest to the UAE.

Dridi’s phone, an iPhone XS Max, was targeted for a longer period, likely between October 2019 and July 2020. The researchers found evidence that she was targeted on two separate occasions with a zero-day attack.

Someone convince me that targets is compatible with literate programming.

It seems like you end up hiding all the code away in standalone scripts, and your notebook ends up just being a bunch of completely opaque `tar_read` and `tar_load` calls.

Last Wednesday I ran @joelnitta's excellent "Introduction to Targets" workshop and taught around 15 people how to write workflows in R. I also tested out some bonus content about running targets on Slurm/HPC which I hope to get included in the workshop eventually.

St. Petersburg for Navy Day 2023, I noticed something odd on the two corvettes anchored in the Neva River.

Both Zelenyy Dol (Buyan-M) and Burya (Karakurt) have their MG-757 Anapa-M anti-saboteur dipping sonar deployed in the port side.

The Neva River is only 46 miles long and flows from Lake Ladoga to the Gulf of Finland, in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea. Before joining the Baltic, the Neva splits into several branches forming a delta, where downtown St. Petersburg is located.

Remember, if you're using {targets}, you're almost guaranteed to find something helpful in {tarchetypes} too, whether it be some different target types that mean you don't have to set the format or want something like `tar_age()` that will always run after a defined period. Starting to mix #tidymodels with #targets for the first time in #rstats... I'm interested to hear tips from anyone who's trodden this path before.

It seems that the tidymodels idea of making a large specification which is evaluated late in one large computation is kind of at odds with the value targets brings to caching intermediate steps?

Okay, here's my best attempt to solve the problem of "which popular repos use targets" using the GitHub API: https://nbviewer.org/github/multimeric/TargetsUsage/blob/main/repos.ipynb. The key thing was searching for _targets.R to identify relevant repos.

There are a few false positives in there that don't really use targets, but I'm pretty confident in crowning https://github.com/adamaltmejd/covid as "the most starred targets pipeline"!
