@bowreality @pavelzinoviev @smallcircles I would've likely considered @obsidian , alongsode #Oshi, #Wsend and maky others like #Tarsnap, if I didn't have to comply with both #GDPR & #BDSG which is incompatible with #CloudAct.
Otherwise I would've used Tarsnap for backups for nearly a decade.

@edafe @pavelzinoviev @smallcircles *nodds in agreement* I'm convinced @obsidian - just like #Tarsnap - are more focussed on keeping a good product / service online than being toxic towards users and customers.
After all, "Imitation is the highest form of flattery" and I do think it's important to look at things in the sense of an #EcoSystem:
For example, Microsoft did not succeed with Xbox as platform by sheer capital, but by making it easy for developers to write games for it. #DirectXbox

@wa7iut @nixCraft *nodds in agreement*
I did try @Stuxhost's #Nextcloud some time ago and it was just noice.
And whilst #Tarsnap is not an option for me due to several regulatory and architectual requirements on my end, I'm convinced they do provide an excellent product and for a lot of people this may just be the option re: #Backups.
@rain not necessarily...
Some #Copyleft and/or #OpenSource don't allow you to do that.
I'm not just talking about "published source" like #Tarsnap's client, but also #AGPLv3 and #SSPL which are basically designed to prevent competiton - #GAFAM or not - from making any commercial product.
Basically aiming at monopolizing any commercial product.

In enhancing my #MathsPrompt tool, I noticed a need for longer data life span. As a quick fix, I set up a backup script with #Tarsnap - an ideal, cost-effective service for text data backup. My script now runs daily at 5pm, ensuring secure and consistent copies of my project data. Future considerations? Perhaps some regular cleanup for outdated backups. Learn more about how I put it together in my latest blogpost. #DataBackup #Automation #CodingPractices #automated https://mlops.systems/posts/2023-07-24-database-backups-tarsnap.html

@Cmdrmoto It's not stable in the sense that anyone who's being paid to care about storage is gonna take it serious.
Espechally since it's not a "#SocialStorage" like #Wuala once was, when people traded storage divided by it's availability...
And that worked without introducing yet another #Shitcoin...
So no, ot's not even useful for #Peertube hosting or some slow backups alike #Tarsnap.
It's just a waste of time and resources and shafts everyone - espechally those not into the grift!
#tarsnap #PeerTube #shitcoin #Wuala #socialstorage
I use #tarsnap to back up my hosts. Amazing service, but it has one nearly supernatural quirk.
They send their "your account is running low" notices immediately after I empty my Paypal account. Every. Single. Time.
The guy who started it is one of those "got his PhD at 20" math geniuses, but apparently his skills extend far beyond mere numbers. :flan_dalf:
@YourAnonRiots in fact I'd not be surprised if people - like in the 70s with reel-tapes, 80s with cassettes and 90s with VHS Tapes - already try to abuse #YouTube as bulk backup media...
Hopefully encrypted tho.
Cuz that would be some janky " #Tarsnap alternative " reminiscent of the #DanmereBacker:

@emilygorcenski @maxschrems @noybeu call me stupid but doesn't that turn said cloud providers into data landfills?
Also you can't trust said providers at all and would've to basically build your own #Tarsnap clone.
And that still would not get one out of the legaleze blast zone...
@didek @esther it's not #E2EE - not only because they violate Kerckhoff's principle by not publishing it [ unlike i.e. #Tarsnap ] but because they're known to be able and willing to rat out users towards LEAs.
Which would not be possible if they properly encrypted shit and did not have any data on them in the first place.
Also I'm not talking about duely submitted subopenas, but voluntary snitching including #PRISM...
@alios leider wie der #Quellcode von Word 1.0 nicht #FLOSS'd, sondern wie #Tarsnap nur "published source"...
@PeterCxy Personally, I wanted to make something like #Tarsnap but as a more flexible option not hard-locked on #AmazonGlacier....
That being said I have a similar problem and I'm looking at a solution but besides georedundant setup of a redundant pair of NAS boxes I've yet to find a satisfactory solution for my [paranoid?] requirements...
@Szwendacz I just archive to #tarsnap annually. Rare that I ever need an e-mail that old, but when I have the 3 times in the last 10 years, it's been in an encrypted backup, easy to pull back 🙂
@sheogorath One other drive is (they are Seagate drives). I migrated them from an old two bay D-Link NAS. It doesn't get a ton of I/O typically, which is why I'm guessing they've lasted this long. I've been using Docker storage on them for the last 2 years, which probably hurt the longevity recently.
The other drives are WD Blues, about 3 years old.
It's on a raidz3 ZFS array, which can take a few drives failing 🙂 Important stuff I back up into #tarsnap, and other clouds.
#tarsnap is a great backup solution until it takes all your money for transmitting the backed up stuff back to you.
Which is slow. Really slow.
And super expensive.

HELLO WORLD!
Good lord, went on an adventure upgrading my kernel to head and removing all my packages and using purely ports. Had a hell of a time getting the nvidia 390 driver working on my laptop and just flipped back to 340. #freebsd is awesome #zfs #tarsnap made this adventure sane.
