Pleasant drive through hop-growing Motueka Valley, then following Buller River (πŸ“·1) on St Arnaud-Kawatiri Hwy into ’s Nelson Lakes NP, which sits within northernmost ranges of Southern Alps. Lake Rotoiti is one of two larger lakes, carved out by glaciers during the last ice age. There’s a serviced DOC camp at Kerr Bay (πŸ“·2-4), close to alpine village of St Arnaud.

Better weather as we returned past the entrance into Whanganui (Westhaven) Inlet in (πŸ“·1); 13km long, it was the first estuary in NZ protected as a combined marine & wildlife reserve. An example causeway on Dry Rd (πŸ“·2); the tide flows beneath. Made a detour to Kaihoka Lakes; the 1st lake is roadside (πŸ“·3) & the 2nd reached via a 15min path through nikau forest (πŸ“·4).

There's a lot of crap being talked about the scrum here regarding the hit and Otago pressure before the ball is put in. I think the ref agrees with me, i.e. that it's illegal and is pinging them.

Murchison in the District is a quintessential NZ small town. It was hit by a severe earthquake over 90 years ago and is popular with visitors seeking water-based activities on the Buller River. A few of Maruia Falls (Maruia River) on the Shenandoah Highway, south of Murchison in , on this 1st day of autumn 2023. Also, the view immediately downstream. The falls were created by the 1929 Murchison earthquake. As DOC note β€œthe presence of biting sandflies can detract from your experience”.

Evening after the rains looking across the salt marshes from Best Island (truly, some islands have no modesty) in . I saw a mythical White Heron at Farewell Spit. It's quite lovely. There are only 200 hundred in New Zealand. In other parts of the world they are call Great Egrets.
