“Come,” they/she/it/he said, also saying “pretty #Tassel!” “Cuby McCubeface!” and “You’ll like,” at the same time.

I followed the child/crone/skeleton/concept for a time, without moving, til we came to a vast Rubik’s cube, hovering in the not-air. It shimmered, then and I saw the color-coded panels were in all the possible combinations at once.

“#Tassle!”

My guide was obviously pleased.

“Oh.” I said, realization dawning. “Tesseract.”

The 4th dimension is weird.

Tassle, you were only good for that one day.
Flipped from one side to the other.
But,
Then we flipped you back and forth again.
Good for one more day.
But,
Then we went for it one last time.
We rather enjoyed the feeling, of the flipping,
Tassle.

The room is as Victorian as the day they built
The house around it. Not a speck of dust,
Not a hint of decay. Even the curtain tassles
Look new, dropped down to knee height by
The unfrayed cords that hold them in place.
This is new; not a museum, not a memory
Nor remembrance. It is a now, alive and
Swaying with the world's turning. But beyond
The curtains there is no empire, just the pool
Of blood it left.

She had nothing on her legs but skin,
Right up to just below the point of interest
Where her skirt began and the skin
Smoothed its way beyond. She stood on
Her own, kicking the dirt with black boots
Dangling tassles into the dust around her
Skinny leather-bound ankles, a cloud of
Anger and loneliness. Her red shirt, motes
Of sand there, too, clung to the breeze.
Are you any different? her eyes said.

She pulled the #tassle rope to draw the curtains aside, unlatched the lock and pushed the window open. A wave of fresh air surged in, urging her to take a deep #breath. The life she left behind was #history. This was the first day of a new Now.

I asked google about tassle to see
And in a definite way
It says tassel it does decree,
In a similar vein it was maintained
That muscle
Although an appendage of flesh on bone
Couldn't replace mussel
That appendage of the sea,
Although not principally
A pedantry minded scribe
I say this much and flee

It was a plain, triple fronted mid century home, nothing unusual in the suburbs of my hometown. They were not a status symbol, unlike modern homes. Hard working migrants toiled in unskilled jobs to save for these humble abodes. But, they were houseproud and inviting.

Walking into my elderly Italian neighbours home, I could see that the humble exterior did not match the interior. Porcelain tiles were laid through the home, a link back to the old country and their childhood homes in the village. They were sparkling clean, the sun glistening off the meticulously clean surfaces.

The lounge room with its ostentatious baroque furniture, gold velvet curtains held with a rope tieback with tassles. This was a grand place reserved only for guests and the local priest. Photos of generations of the family adorned the walls, paying homage to those who had made sacrifices for them to migrate to this country.

The kitchen was the heart of the home, and the aroma of freshly percolated coffee on the stovetop and a freshly made tiramisu drew me onwards. Taking a seat we started to have one of our regular chats.

I would hear all about the arduous trip on the ship and the difficulties they'd faced when they arrived as migrants to this country. The overt racism they'd experienced in school and their workplaces, and the multiple jobs she and her husband had worked to provide a life for their family. They were humble and grateful.

This was our story.

He flicked the #tassle on the curtain tie-back with an expression of mild distaste. It would take ages to remodel this place.
"Did you want that cup of tea now dear?"
His gran bustled into the room with a tray filled with cups, teapot and biscuits. The cups were unwashed, biscuits soft and stale. He couldn't bear to check the teapot contents.
"We're going out, gran, do you remember? Did you find your coat?"
The quicker he got her to the home the sooner he could turn a profit.
