Moving on with the reviews and tasting notes. First next few on deck: the hazies.

Have some beer reviewing to do this weekend. One full box, 24 beers, needs to be described. It's "work", but I don't complain.

Just took a big swig of 16 yo Lagavulin. Imagine if you poured a crap-ton of eel oil on an ancient bog full of iron age peat mummies, sprinkled it with malted Band-Aids and caramelized harness leather, set it on fire, and somehow made drinkable booze out of the remains; that’s the flavor profile, and it’s a fecken doozy. #TastingNotes #SingleMaltWhisky

On the Scottsdale Wine Trail: An Update
Quite a bit has changed since 2017 when we first published a post about the Scottsdale Wine Trail. The wine trail is collection of Arizona winery tasting rooms located in Old Town and downtown Scottsdale. One winery has relocated on the trail, three new wineries have joined and one has left.
The tasting roo

Balverne Wines: An Elegant Expression of Russian River Valley and Chalk Hill
Notre Vue Estate & Winery sits on a 710-acre property south of Healdsburg straddling Sonoma’s Russian River Valley and Chalk Hill AVAs. 250 acres of vineyards cover the rolling hills, but 350 acres are protected as “Forever Wild” open space. Balverne is a sis

Tuscany or Sicily, the Perfect Choice for Springtime Sipping
A Chardonnay blend or Nerello Mascalese are perfect springtime sips as the weather is warming, but still unsettled. Can’t decide between a spring salad and a roasted vegetable and farro salad? Still enjoying roasted chicken and not quite

Whiskey aged in Stout barrels seems to me to be best on a hot summer's day, with a truckload of ice and filled up with soda water.
I realise I’ve been remiss in keeping this account updated, but friends, I just published a new video I’m awfully proud of, and I very much hope you’ll enjoy my (potentially spicy) tasting notes, deep dives nobody asked for, and me making a lot of silly faces as I try all the British (and one Irish) teabag teas I could find: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1LVZq-maEiQ
Pam’s UN-Oaked Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from Ron Rubin Winery
Unoaked Chardonnay is fairly common, but the same cannot be said for unoaked Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet is almost always made by fermenting and aging the wine in oak barrels of various types and ages. Winery owner and beverage specialist Ron Rubin is clearly not following the crowd with his line of UN-Oaked wines

Today I have to condense a bunch of tasting notes from 150 words each down to 100 words.
That's very little space in which to put across what is unique and special about each gin, to describe its flavour such that readers can figure out whether or not they might enjoy it, or to include my own reaction to it.
Tough also to do any of that in an interesting and engaging way.
Wish me luck!

Why You Should Sip German Spätburgunder, AKA Pinot Noir
Germany is certainly better known for its white wines, Riesling in particular, than it is for its red wines. But Germany’s cool growing conditions can result in red wines with lively flavors that are food friendly and have very modest alcohol. Chill them during summer and enjoy them at room temperatu

Calcareous Vineyard: Two Pretty Rhône-Style Blends Crafted in Paso Robles
Paso Robles is a wine region we have just recently begun to explore. The more we taste, the more we appreciate the wide variety of wine styles made in the region. Today’s tasting includes two proprietary blends that leave us wanting to plan a visit during our next trip to Pa

I asked ChatGPT to write me a tasting note for a specific gin, 100 to 150 words long, with details of its flavour, where it is made, and what botanicals it contains.
The results were bland, boring to read, riddled with factual errors, and left me feeling like I didn't know any more about the gin than I had before I read them.
Hardly surprising, but nice to feel like my job is safe for a little while longer at least.

#WhiskyAdvent day 2: Armorik 7 year, batch 1 (50%)
Malty and maybe a little fruit on the nose?
Fruit comes through on the palate with a nice chocolatey sweetness.
This is delicious!

#WhiskyAdvent day 1: Glen Elgin 12 Year Old - Batch 5 (49.1%)
Bright and fruity on the nose. More fruit on the palate, very sweet and light and a little bit floral. A great start.

I have info on c.300 gins in a spreadsheet that I need to copy into markdown files. These will form the basis of the tasting notes that end up in the book.
I could write a quick and dirty Python script to extract what I need, populate templates, and save the files into the appropriate folders.
OTOH it's been months since I last coded anything and I am NOT up to speed. It *might* be quicker just to do it all by hand.
Hmmm... 🤔

Brought a mixed case of Left Hand Brewing back with me from a recent trip to Denver. The Peanut Butter Milk Stout is a standout due to its vivid flavours and colourful presence. A truly enjoyable stout. Pity there were only 3 of them among the selection of 12.
