According to President Volodymyr #Zelenskyj, Rustem #Umerov is to succeed Defense Minister #Reznikov. The 41-year-old entrepreneur and investor Umerov, who is of Crimean #Tatar descent, has been campaigning for years for the liberation of Crimea, which was annexed by #Russia in 2014. Like many Crimean Tatars, his parents were deported from Crimea under Josef Stalin.

117 of 175 political prisoners held in russian jails are Crimean Tatar representatives

According to the director of the #Crimean #Tatar Resource Center Eskender Bariyev, 117 of the 175 political prisoners in russian jails are Crimean Tatar.

66 of the 101 detentions that were reported in the first half of 2023 involved indigenous individuals, Bariyev said.

“This is the invaders’s ‘democracy’,” he added.

The first thing #russians always did after the #occupation of a certain territory was to destroy the culture and language of the local indigenous population.

After the deportation of #Crimean #Tatars in 1944, russia tried to erase any mention of them in #Crimea. 560 rural libraries and 861 school libraries were destroyed and burned.

860 Crimean #Tatar schools were closed.

Many different manuscripts have also disappeared. Their fate is unknown.

On July 27, police detained Lutfiye Zudiyeva, a journalist of the Graty media outlet, in #Crimea.

According to the editorial assignment, she was to cover the court hearing in the Supreme Court of Crimea on the case of Deputy Chairman of the #Mejlis of the Crimean #Tatar people Nariman Dzhelal and the Akhtemov brothers, whom the #Russian authorities accuse of #sabotage.

Along with #Zudiyeva, 12 other #Crimean #Tatars were detained too.

Every year on May 18, Ukraine commemorates the memory of the victims of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people.

The deportation of Crimean Tatars from the Crimean Peninsula began at dawn on May 18, 1944

They were given only 15 minutes to pack. Within three days, almost the entirety of the #Crimean #Tatar population of #Crimea was herded into railway cars and sent toward Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and russia.
