Now playing: Monsieur's Hulot's Holiday

I couldn't think of a better way to ring in the first day of summer than with the perfect vacation movie!

This movie is so near and dear to my heart, y'all. Third-favorite movie behind the original Night of the Living Dead and Jaws!

It's a movie that I would encourage everyone to give a shot, especially with it being on HBO Max and the Criterion Channel.

I'll be humming the main theme for *days.* And that's a really good thing, that. No complaints here!

March 31: Spot the Tower on

Never was or will I be a fan of Jacques , the loveable Luddite who wouldn't be as big as he became if it wasn't for the technological wonders of the 20th century. Having said that, his (1967) holds a special place in my heart. Tati's alter ego Monsieur roams a hyper-modern , actually an enormous soundstage dubbed . People, buildings and gadgets interact with and against each other, each and everyone as plotless as a prop. In unison, it becomes a perfectly orchestrated symphony of maddening modernism. But Tati wouldn't be Tati if it wasn't for a glimpse of quiet nostalgia. A woman holding the glass-and-steel entrance door of yet another concrete office building. In the glass, a burst of warm light and colour and movement. And then it's gone, and we remember how that tower once was the thorn in the Luddite's eye, that “baroque and mercantile fancy of a builder of machines”.

Turner Classic Movies is running the Jacques Tati slapstick beach comedy Monsieur Hulot's Holiday today at 2:30 PM EDT, and I have to do EVERYTHING HUMANLY POSSIBLE TO HYPE THAT UP FOR Y'ALL.

If you can watch it, watch it. If you can record it, record it.

If you can't do that, HBO Max and Criterion Channel have that available for streaming!

And even better, HBO Max has the follow-up, Mon Oncle, available as well.

And even even better, Criterion Channel has all six of Tati's feature-length movies (including Tati's feature-film debut Jour de Fete, the amazing and criminally overlooked Playtime, the terrific Trafic, and his charming final effort Parade).

I can't overstate how much I love love love love love love Monsieur Hulot's Holiday. Third-favorite movie behind the original Night of the Living Dead and Jaws.

So utterly worth it.

Beste volger, dit is het soort films waar ik graag naar kijk. En blijf kijken, en nog eens kijk. Ik kijk geen voetbal maar wel film, le Cinèma. Boring me.

À mon avis, Tati est l'un des plus grands réalisateurs de tous les temps. Tous ses films, malheureusement si peu nombreux, sont incontournables, mais le diptyque Mon Oncle and Playtime apporte un regard si pointu sur la modernité de l'époque et actuelle que je le considère pas loin de la science-fiction prédictive.
