4/ To reiterate, none of us believe that #PredatoryPublishing is a useful concept and it is often used as a stick with which to beat #OpenAccess publishers, while subscription dinosaurs like #Elsevier, #Sage, #Wiley, #TaylorAndFrancis and #Springer get a free pass. However, it seemed to us like we had all run out of patience with #MDPI and when @gemmaderrick and @bart announced they were resigning, we stepped down in solidarity with a reminder to publishers that a journal is "simply a name."

I have been opposed to the for-profit academic publishing model for a long-time. #Elsevier, #Springer, #TaylorAndFrancis etc. are mere rent-extractors. It is a deeply unethical industry. And that's why I volunteer for a non-profit #OpenAccess journal.

But I did not know Elsevier and T&F were so actively advancing the #FossilFuel industry—in an era of #ClimateCrisis.

All the more reason to #StopElsevier!

I got a #review request from a journal owned by #taylorandfrancis I went to check what the journal's #OpenAccess policy is.

T&F charge nearly 3000 euro of "article processing charges" for a single article. The research for the article has been most likely publicly funded and now the public is charged again to make it openly accessible.

This is mere rent extraction and a scam. Fuck no will I review for them.

So rather than paying outrageous subscription fees and APCs to predatory for-profit companies like #Elsevier, #Springer, #TaylorAndFrancis etc., why not use a fraction of the money to set up non-profit academic/institutional publishers and support independet non-profit #OpenAccess journals?

Why use public funds increase Elsevier's (etc) profits which they acquire by drawing rent from research they did not do or fund?
