Ukrainian government to allow blood transfusions by combat medics at pre-hospital stage.
“ It is estimated that this reform will significantly reduce the percentage of preventable deaths on the battlefield due to blood loss.”

Very interesting study.
"Tourniquet self-application assessment in cold weather conditions"
"...study aimed to assess the ability of non-medical civilians to self-apply extremity tourniquets in cold weather."
"The ratcheting marine-designed OMNA ranked the highest for application easiness on both the upper and lower
extremities..."

Here multiple HyFin chest seals are thrown away in disgust.
It’s likely they’ve been stored in a hot environment and the sticking agent has become viscous, effectively gluing the seal halves to themselves, rendering the whole thing useless.
Equipment and supplies must be regularly checked and scrutinised!

A little ingenuity....
Don't want to lose your trauma shears? Attach them to a retractable cable, with the other end hooked to personal webbing.

Interesting comparison of #tactical #medical chest #seals found on Telegram from a Ukrainian #medic.
https://t.me/perfect_sedation/71
Key conclusions:
* HyFin & SAM seals rate highest. They performed very well under all scenarios. Strong adhesion and work as claimed.
* Chest seals from Rhino Rescue are not the worst.
* Bolin Chest Seal is worse than Rhino Rescue.
* Russel Chest Seal is better than previous versions, but still not SAM or HyFin.

Usually reluctant to link to a publication like The Economist, but this article is worth it.
What Ukraine’s bloody battlefield is teaching medics
Highlights problems in Ukrainian medical logistics, Russian attacks on medical facilities, challenges of whole blood supply and again the thorny issue of air medevac (even though use of aerial drones is highlighted).

Here a solider, with shrapnel wounds in both lower legs, is given a blood plasma transfusion and evacuated by ambulance.

A bit hard to tell with the "soundtrack", but the original commentary states there was some incoming fire as well.

Reports circulate that a Russian guided aerial bomb struck a blood transfusion center in Ukraine. This was in the Kupiansk community in Kharkiv region. Dead and wounded are reported.

Extremely interesting Israeli based study from 2018:
"Comparison of Two Tourniquets on a Mid-Thigh Model: The Israeli Silicone Stretch and Wrap Tourniquet (IST) vs. The Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT)"
https://academic.oup.com/milmed/article/183/suppl_1/157/4959953
"The IST was superior to the CAT in producing effective occlusion pressure while not prolonging application time. These results may indicate that the IST remains a valid option for controlling mid-thigh bleeding."
Surprising finding!
A Russian Solider got hit with a 30mm non-explosive projectile and survived.
The related X-RAy will be done in the reply to this posting

The real "unseen" heroes of this war are the ukrainian women.
Meet volunteer doctor Natalya: "They brought a soldier with tourniquets on three limbs. You look and understand: they will have to be amputated"
Natalya is an anesthesiologist. Today, she is saving the lives of our soldiers at the headquarters in the Bakhmut direction as part of the PDMSh - the First Voluntary Mobile Hospital named after Mykola Pirogov.

Seen on the Telegram channel of Yigal Levin (https://t.me/yigal_levin) with the translated text, "The British Ministry of Defense showed how the Ukrainian military is trained to operate Malloy drones capable of evacuating wounded soldiers from the battlefield."
Just because the drone is capable of medevac, doesn't mean it'll be suitable in #Ukraine. Regular medevac is known to be too hazardous without air superiority. Drones may suffer the same fate. Caution advised!

How Medical Treatment Is Giving Ukraine a Quiet Edge Over Russia
"Top-notch equipment and freshly trained front-line medics are giving wounded Ukrainian soldiers better survival rates than Russians"
https://wsj-article-webview-generator-prod.sc.onservo.com/webview/WP-WSJ-0001006483
Interesting article about medical care for Ukrainian combatants. A little bit US-centric, but it is the WSJ (not behind a paywall).
Again the point about the time taken for patients to reach stabilisation points.

Wound Packing instructional video from the Joint Trauma System group.
https://deployedmedicine.com/content/45
The video covers:
- Proper steps to identify major bleeding within wound
- How and where to apply direct pressure to control bleeding
- How to properly remove gauze and pack wound correctly
- How to verify blood is being controlled by gauze
- Prepping wound for a pressure dressing
All that in just 79 seconds! Video is also downloadable locally, which is nice.

Our latest update: Tactical Medical Gear for Individual First Aid Kits.
An overview of the items we've purchased, why they've been purchased and who we're working with. Essentially, a lot of #tactical #medical items bought to build IFAKs.
A busy couple of months and it feels like we're contributing to saving lives.
As always, a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible.

The tourniquets we bought from JB Tacticals were ridiculously cheap. Almost too cheap to be true really. This makes us wonder about the quality and whether they're up to the job. It's a serious concern, because when a tourniquet fails people die.
The tourniquets are not official CAT standard, but the JB Tacticals online shop does heavily promote this letter from the Ukrainian Guard, which I have to believe is genuine.
We eagerly await feedback on these #tourniquets.

Today we bought some more #tactical #medical supplies for IFAKs - pouches and tourniquets.
We also bought chest decompression needles. In the Prolonged Field Care podcast we posted about last week (https://social.coop/@blackflagmedical/110632223262833530) it was noted that there are never enough of these needles, so we bought everything available in the JB Tacticals online shop.
