SF’s buried bishop woes continue at #TCEC (SF is of course leading the event but this shows it’s not perfect).

In this position SF plays 8..Ng6 ?? with 0.49 eval. Stoof inmediately booms to 2.36 and kibitzing Leela to 13.37 !! What is going on ? Simply 9. Bxg6 hxg6 (or fxg6) 10 g5 and the bishop will never see daylight again !

Red arrow indicates SF was expecting 9. Bxc6 ??

3 years ago, many pundits thought Srockfish (now known as StockfishClassical. last pre-NNUE iteration) had reached perfection.

It has of course been surpassed since - but would you bet that it can lose 1. e4 c5 with White on strong hardware and long time control 🙄

Another stunning game at the #tcec bonus !

Leea is going for a simple BR vs NR endgame - textbook favourable circumstances but I would never have thought it is any danger at 3600 level.

But SF realizes too late he is dead lost in this !! - however Leela herself never actually realizes the she was winning, and spoils it with 29 g4. SF comes back to -1 in this bonus with 3 pairs to go.

I would have been very depressed with the black position (it almost looks resignable after 30.Rg1) but 30…g5!! and 32…Rc5 were amazing defensive moves. 30…g5 gets the bishop active on the long diagonal; and White doesn’t want to grab the exchange on c5 because Black’s bishop would then be mighty on the king diagonal! Amazing play!
