I’m leery of this claim as a trope because it’s so close to Democrats saying “Republicans are stupid.” And I’m also leery of medicalizing and psychologizing as methods. Nevertheless, there does seem to be some science here (and lots of anecdotes, too, which, when suitably aggregated, are one of our few reliable sources of…. data). Perhaps readers can talk me off the ledge on this one, because it’s uncomfortably close to a The Last of Us scenario.

Anecdata: host manipulation by viruses.

My ex-wife could often anticipate she was coming down with a virus when she'd gone on an unplanned house-cleaning spree.

This she would blame on what she called "pre-viral energy."

She's an introvert; maybe the virus wasn't tuned quite right to get her out of the house, socializing and spreading. But it's not news that viruses manipulate host behavior to their own advantage.

"... circa 30% of people are highly sensitive (applies to animals too), the other 70% are resistant to changing behaviour as circumstances change."
