This picture is all too familiar. The focus should not be just on attracting more teachers.

We need to support those we've got. We need to support those with less than 5 - 10 years of experience.

They are leaving teaching in great numbers.

Ever since my own kids were young they'd ask 'How do you know that person?'

It could be that I've stopped for a chat, or they have noticed me give a smile and a slight nod to someone from afar. Either way, I've always told them that it was my job to know these people.

To help these young people when they needed me, similarly to back off and let them stretch their wings when they were learning to fly.

Running into past students is a secret claim to fame for teachers. We love hearing about what our past students are doing. But the best thing of all is when they reminisce and say thanks for all that they now understand, you did for them.

Spread the word, if you see a past teacher of yours, say 'hi.' It will fill their cup and put a pep in their step.

It is time to remember that just like the young people they work with, teachers are people too.
