I don't understand what you think you're saying

I follow people only because they have a valuable contribution to make in some interest area of mine

I don't follow as a badge of anything, or to compel anyone to follow me back

And the poll itself does take a stand about the motivations for following and the insistence of a reciprocal follow-back

Perhaps you've never heard of #TeamFollowBack in the very early years of Twitter

It became the butt of quite a few jokes

I was there when the old blue bird started. When you tweeted via text message, and most people outside of tech didn't "get it". I saw it start to crumble and fester.

Mastodon is finally feeling like old Twitter. I think it's a combo of the right app, the right server, and the right content creators.

I'm looking for more people to follow and followers to engage with. #TeamFollowBack

I *always* check out the feed of potential Follows, and I am most emphatically **not** a member of #TeamFollowback

I do not belong to #TeamFollowback -- and never have belonged

That said, you and I are on two very different arcs here:

You're being a content creator

I'm a content consumer

To be quite honest (blunt?) about it: a lot of people really do not have very much to say

So why do I give up finite screen space to them?

On Mastodon, I am way more likely to follow back than I was at Twitter. I do it to almost everybody, reflexively.

I was always skeptical of #TeamFollowBack over there. Still am. Who I follow informs the timeline I get. And a follow isn’t a contract. It’s like the legal boilerplate corporations insert in email—that isn’t binding. You sending me a message doesn’t create a contract.

But still. People here are great, and I’m learning who’s who and what’s what, so for now, I’m Johnny #FollowBack.

Which, along with all the other Follow tags, I always thought was complete idiocy

I never did, and still do *not* #Follow people merely because they follow me

Personally I think that whole ancient #Twitter #TeamFollowback schtick became uninteresting about ten years ago

About the same time #Facebook became uninteresting

Do people have something interesting to say, or not?
