Moin, too sad, I haven't had time yesterday in #Kiel to look after the #UrbanGulls (also haven't had the cam around as I had other duties), but loved to hear the begging calls of our young #HerringGull's all over the city.
I really hope, next year I have more time to monitor the gulls. #teamgull #BalticSea

#Gull breeding season has nearly reached an end and almost all the nests I've been monitoring since late June are now empty.
Those of you following along can read my new entry: https://kmkrebs.com/posts/2023-08/2023-08-28-nest-visits-aug-23rd-27th/

For those of you who are as into #gulls as I am and haven't unfollowed me yet, here's my latest update on the nests I'm monitoring: https://kmkrebs.com/posts/2023-08/2023-08-17-aug-16th-life-and-death/
#GreaterBlackBackGull #teamgull #birding

How strange it is to watch some of the #gulls I've been monitoring since they were chicks take to the air!

New nests and missing chicks -- the latest update from my somewhat obsessive #gull nest monitoring here in #Vancouver

So many changes as the chicks near fledging...

I made it out yesterday to check up on some of the #gull nests I'm monitoring. All the chicks are growing up, and some are close to fledging.

Moin! Haven't had any time to check the #gull nest on rooftops during the last weeks.
They should have fledged now.
2 weeks off from work now, will be out and about #birding :)

Again no sign of bird flu in the gulls, which is great. Lots of evidence of rats, but it doesn't look like they really predate the gulls. On the contrary - when we spooked up the colony on arrival, one must have panicked and coughed up a recently eaten young rat! Also saw a couple of pellets containing rat bones, as well as plastic and shellfish.
I've got another update on the #gull nests I've been monitoring here in #Vancouver
They're all growing quickly, some are probably only a week or two from fledging.

I wonder if anyone's doing a PhD on different habitat use by age in gulls. Or they probably have already.. #TeamGull #Ornithology
Elsewhere at Walney, reserve staff think they've gotten about 20 Little tern chicks fledged from 10 pairs, which is phenomenal and a new record for the site. The place is doing great now I've left! 🤔

#Gull nest update for July 21st posted here: https://kmkrebs.com/posts/2023-07/2023-07-21-july-21st-disturbance/
It's not all good news this time -- one of the nests was disturbed by rooftop cleaners.
It's been a week since my last update -- but here's the latest entry about the nesting #gulls I'm monitoring in #Vancouver.

Take a look at this cute nestling!

OK, counting the gull chicks turned into a slog as I had to check the overlap on each picture as I went, and urgh. But I counted 702 large chicks, out of 1,466 pairs.
It's not super useful because we're looking at two seperate species, but that's a productivity of 0.48 overall which seems good. Of course, the lessers could be doing terribly and the herrings amazing, or they could both be doing OK, but it gives us a bit of an idea of how things are going

After counting all 4,965 ducks I moved on to counting the juveniles/big chicks in the gull colony. Because we aren't ringing due to HPAI, I am trying to count them with drones.
I need good detail, so rather than an orthomosaic (which can reduce image quality) I flew a 30m high flight with just 10% overlap, and then I'm just going through each picture individually rather than stitching them all together. It's quite sweet seeing the chicks from this angle.
