More info re Amphipyra berbera Rungs, 1949 (Svensson's Copper Underwing) - subspecies svenssoni Fletcher, 1968 was not universally accepted. It was synonymised with species berbera Rungs, 1949 by Fibiger & Hacker in Noctuidae Europaeae 9 (published 2007) as in their opinion there were no external morphological or genitalia structure differences. The subspecies Amphipyra berbera svenssoni Fletcher, 1968 is now synonymised with the species A. berbera Rungs, 1949. The vernacular name Svensson's Copper Underwing remains valid.

Seasonal moths

November Moth (aggregate, could be one of three closely related species distinguishable only if raised from larvae, or through genetical dissection),

December Moth, lovely furry species that finally turned up in my garden in October 2022

Winter Moth, delicate looking but hardy winter-flying moth

Today's random selection while filing away my photos: Chocolate-tip (Clostera curtula), a species that is spreading from southern England into the midlands (there are also some isolated Scottish populations). Its caterpillars feed on poplars and sallows.

This year, I saw well over 60 species of moth I'd not seen before, among them the wonderful creatures we know as Convolvulus Hawk-moth, December Moth, Rosy Footman, and Black Arches

The full list of the moths I've recorded and photographed in the last 4 years is on my Imaging Storm site

Why is a moth a moth and not a butterfly? Why is one considered more pretty than the other? This is my current rabbithole.

I'm learning the tooting trade!

I'm a professional ecologist based in Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands. I am passionate about the natural world and explore it during work and in my free time.

Most of my toots will be about

I've got lots of other interests which I'll toot about occasionally too!

As 2022 draws to a close, I’m going to share a species highlight each day of December 🔎

First up, my first ever Clearwing moth!! The beautiful Red-tipped Clearwing, nectaring on Bramble. Look at those wings!

My wife just got very excited to learn of the hashtag , but I thought she was saying "teen moth," like Teen Wolf, and now I want that movie / TV show.

High school student who grows moth wings and becomes incredibly athletic, or just attracted to light?

What sport would they be good at? O_o

We are looking for quality images of larger moths for the forthcoming atlas. Images do not necessarily need to be of moths photographed in London.

For more information, please visit londonmoths.org.uk/your-images for details.

Mrs Sciencebase will attest to how excited I got when a couple of Convolvulus -moths (Agrius convolvuli) turned up in our garden at the end of the summer.

They were initially drawn to tobacco plants () that we had grown specifically to attract them. I think we had them arrive on three occasions with at least two on one night. Likelihood is that they are the offspring of migrants from mainland Europe
