Beyond nuisance lawsuits and defamation liability, it's not particularly clear what existing regulatory regime or body of law Section 230 is holding back from effectively checking the behavior of tech companies.

I left Facebook in 2019 because any use I was getting couldn’t make up for the harm being caused to individuals and society. Even if it didn’t affect me, I didn’t want to support it with my presence. No regrets. Still use insta tho (Derp) but maybe not for long. Now that birdsite is in the hands of a self obsessed maniac about whose ilk we have learned much from @parismarx & @Rushkoff & others, it appears time to not just stop using birdsite but delete my account #techlash

@sten Given the #techlash at both general and regulatory levels in the US and EU, I'd give a strong disagree to that first.

And given expert-level criticism of proposals, especially from unaffiliated / independent researchers, I'd tend to repsect that over either motivated interests from vendors, their staff / employees / officers / business partners. Or the lay public, which tends to be known for 1) failing to grasp complex projects and 2) falling for overly-simplistic and ultimately inappropriate models or concepts.
