A lot has been said by Internet exceptionalists about the deregulatory objection to treating #Section230 as a punching bag for the #techlash. But not enough has been said about how 230 reform is a weird centerpiece of strategy for people who want to *regulate* Internet platforms. Beyond nuisance lawsuits and defamation liability, it's not particularly clear what existing regulatory regime or body of law Section 230 is holding back from effectively checking the behavior of tech companies.
đ What if it's the creative industry - not tech - powering real innovation?

I was watching a webinar with Professor Neil Selwyn
âRethinking Edtech for an age of climate climateâ
and he used the word Techlash as a term for technology backlash. I had to stop watching because it was such a brilliant word. Here is the video

I will go back to watching it once I have got used to the term techlash

I left Facebook in 2019 because any use I was getting couldnât make up for the harm being caused to individuals and society. Even if it didnât affect me, I didnât want to support it with my presence. No regrets. Still use insta tho (Derp) but maybe not for long. Now that birdsite is in the hands of a self obsessed maniac about whose ilk we have learned much from @parismarx & @Rushkoff & others, it appears time to not just stop using birdsite but delete my account #techlash
@sten Given the #techlash at both general and regulatory levels in the US and EU, I'd give a strong disagree to that first.
And given expert-level criticism of proposals, especially from unaffiliated / independent researchers, I'd tend to repsect that over either motivated interests from vendors, their staff / employees / officers / business partners. Or the lay public, which tends to be known for 1) failing to grasp complex projects and 2) falling for overly-simplistic and ultimately inappropriate models or concepts.

The techlash is a bust
After three and a half years, the U.S. backlash against tech's biggest firms has failed to dent or daunt them. Their profits are up across the board and they sit on massive hoards of cash.
And, crucially, the nonstop barrage of high-profile CEO hearings and scathing reports has so far failed to produce any significant new law reining in tech's power.

"Good Intentions, Bad Inventions" from the Data Society unpacks 4 myths about creating "healthy tech." (Hint: obsessing over addiction, time on screen metrics may not be productive. And tech can't fix tech's societal costs.)
Also imho the actual PDF structured as a very effective & very easy to digest 9-page "tabular pamphlet". My personal reading time is like, three minutes or so.

Poll: Two-thirds of Americans want to break up companies like Amazon and Google
And the results hold across most age groups, education levels, demographics, and political ideologies.
