As someone who's always been the managed, not the manager, here is how to manage:
* communicate often or your reports will think they're in trouble every time you ask to talk.
* ask questions. it's okay not to understand things at first.
* learn how things fit together.
* learn how your team relates to other teams.
* trust your people.
* listen to the team's experience.
* defend your team from unreasonable demands and criticism.
* you work for your team first, your boss second.
