Are the #TechSEO folks watching Google Marketing Live? They announced Google Merchant Next which will pull in stuff "automatically" populated from the website. More reliance on Schema I imagine! #eCommerce
Just about to take on a new ecom client. Structure is terrible but they are on a system. Not sure why but ecom software decided some time back that a product url at root level was the best thing to do rather then structured - i understand why they concluded this but...
Awesome update for Horseman! With GTP3.5 integration with your own API key and 40 new snippets for website crawling!
I love what Chris is doing with this app!

perhaps it's the Tech SEO in me that is comfortable here - lot more devs around though they are who I am following, so picking up those vibes. I instigated a mastodon alias using webfinger for myself this morning so you can now also find me using: @simoncox
Not sure that's going to be a life saver though. Is a lot more techie than marketing led. I'm ok with this. :)
Ah! No need to raise a ticket. It is the Netlify pre-render cache and they are saying Googlebot is ok with this. So if I am crawling a Netlify site I need to have a User Agent of Chrome or I might get incorrect data.
More on it here: https://answers.netlify.com/t/support-guide-understanding-and-debugging-prerendering/150
Had a very odd occurrence crawling a site on Netlify where it was giving me a page that doesn't exist any longer. I tried Crawler Agents Screaming Frog and Googlebot to get this but when I changed the Crawler Agent to Chrome it was OK. Screaming Frog also tested and confirmed the same result. May have something to do with Netlify pre-rendering cache and user agent.
Think I'm going to raise it as an issue with Netlify as that potentially causes issues with SEO. Also annoying!
@defaced @BrendaMalone Can I jump in – Brenda, sometimes tags bring in html elements that break the head, as Chris has described. If a body html element occurs in the head then crawlers (inc Google) think that the head has finished and the body has begun meaning it ignores any meta after the html tag - which can be an issue. I always recommend that and tagging script in the head goes last as you can never trust an ad agency not to plop an iframe into an advert script!
"Technically you could have a single central robots.txt for all your international sites (de.example, ch.example, at.example, etc.) that's hosted on your CDN"

HREFLang is a way for websites to indicate to search engines which language and geographical target a webpage is intended for. It’s not a ranking factor, but this is really important for big companies to get right because they often have multiple duplicate pages on their website, and Google only displays one or two. Yes it’s complicated, but I am shocked at many get it wrong. #seo #techseo
@JacquesBouchard
Mostly URL discovery and associated redirects for old URLs. But also histories of sites can be really useful when solving issues - #techseo and business related issues.
@JacquesBouchard Best tip I have is do a post and include the tags you might be interested in: i.e:
I'd like to know more about #seo #techseo #technicalseo #marketing #seostrategy #FlyingCars
Toot that and then go to your toot and click on the tags and follow them - they will appear in your home timeline from the fediverse.
The follow icon is the person with the + you can follow people or tags with that. Confusing but once you know!

@fili @JacquesBouchard @ajkohn @MikeBlazer @ilovechoclates_ @johnmu Ironically I have never worked on a site where I could control robots.txt but not /sitemap.xml but there must be use-cases out there where this has happened! #SEO #techseo
@JacquesBouchard @ajkohn @MikeBlazer @ilovechoclates_ @fili @johnmu good find! Makes sense and tha’ts what we all should be specifying but if there are situations where it’s not possible we know there is a current viable workaround - but it needs keeping an eye on! #seo #techseo
@ilovechoclates_ Back to your original question. xml = good idea. HTML = depends. Lot of folk say no. I say yes as it can help visitors find what they need. With big sites I recommend they don't put all the pages just the sections and important pages. You can get very creative with your HTML sitemap but it is a sign of the nerdy! 🤓 #seo #techseo
@ajkohn @JacquesBouchard @MikeBlazer @ilovechoclates_ @fili @johnmu
Yes, that was my understanding but Mike brought up that the dev docs say "A sitemap can be posted anywhere on your site, but a sitemap affects only descendants of the parent directory."
This is sound advice, but I wanted to test it of course as I had never put one anywhere but root.
Also, I wonder if 'affects' is the best word here. 🤣 🤓

Just checked this test and the page is indexed. URL Inspection in GSC tells me there is no page referrer and the page was found in the sitemap – a level below the page in another directory. Conclusion is that you can put an xml sitemap anywhere and it will pick up urls outside of the directory it is in.
