Are you getting/seeing heads cut-off in pictures in #Mastodon posts? Or other important bits of pictures cropped out? For this week's #TechTip I'll show you how you can #post a #picture , like this one of #Elvis on the set of Jailhouse Rock, with his head still visible in the #cropped timeline version of the picture.

First, let's look at how this would appear if I just uploaded the picture into my post and did nothing else at all to it...

I mostly post content about .NET MAUI, Mastodon (and other Tech tips), and Maths, and I already have used up my 5 pinned posts, already had to sacrifice some - how to add more?

Create an index post for each of you main topics, with a brief description and a link for each post/thread (you only need to link to a thread's first post) that you want to include, and pin those to your profile instead. 🙂

Did you know that if you have an image with text on it in #iOS, #Voiceover will detect and read it? But here’s the kicker: save that image to your photos, tap share, choose Microsoft 365’s extract option, and voila! The Microsoft Office app opens, displaying the text in an accessible format. Now you can copy, share, or save it to Notes. Opt for ‘save to Notes’ and watch as a sticky note with the text appears in OneNote.

Tip Tuesday! Ask Siri, "What's my update?" Siri will tell you the weather forecast, calendar appointments, reminders, and a brief news summary. #EdTech #TechTip

I have a #TechTip for you this week about how to create memorable, #Strong #Passwords such as a mix of letters and numbers, at least 1 uppercase, at least 1 special character, etc. I got this one from a video by an actual hacker.

He said to think of a memorable sentence, and abbreviate it into a password. So, a sentence like "My birthday is the 29th of February!" abbreviates to "Mbit29thoF!". So it's strong, and easy to remember! But that's only the start...

Ok, I'll tackle this for starters. 🙂 Your posts are automatically propagated out to the servers where you have followers (so now that I follow you, your posts will show up on dotnet.social), as well as any posts you boost ("retweet"). These are called federated posts (which you can see in your federated timeline).

Also if you include hashtags, like #TechTip then anyone who follows that hashtag will see any federated posts that include it.

Pro tip: when authoring system configurations, make sure you use the appropriate comment decorator. Not all configs use "#"!

It definitely didn't take me an hour to realize why my polkit rules were erroring on compilation...

For Ansible folk, don't forget about the "comment" filter that has a few predefined decorators. For example:

#vlc as an #OSS #Podcast player on #MacOS: When I copied Podcast URLs into the subscription dialog, linebreaks were stored, corrupting vlc's configuration so that, at the next start of the app, most subscriptions seemed to be missing.

The fix was easy once I found it: Edit the postcast-urls parameter in $HOME/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc/vlcrc and join this line with all following URLs on separate lines. The parameter value must not include linebreaks, but you may join as many URLs with a | separator as you like, producing one very long line! Its syntax is as follows:

postcast-urls=https://example.com|https://example.orglhttps://example.net

Make sure to close vlc BEFORE you edit the vlcrc as it will be written when the app is closed.

#TechTip: Did you know there is something like Homebrew on Windows? It is the Windows Package Manager

1) Search for Windows Package Manager in the Microsoft Store and download it.
2) open Windows Terminal
3) type winget install appname for example, use winget install nvaccess.nvda, or winget install python3!

You can install Zoom, Discord, Steam and other apps this way. I no longer go to websites to install apps.
