Seguing smoothly into science fiction by way of Trek, let's turn to , a titan of the field, who is also a wicked-sharp critic of . Ted's been at this since at least 2017, when he identified tech CEOs' fears of as a form of transference of their fear of corporations, which are, after all, autonomous artificial life-forms that are rapidly devouring the human race:

I always enjoy 's thoughts. Didn't know he had written only 18 short stories. That means I can read his entire body of work this summer. 😊

"The doomsday scenario is not a manufacturing A.I. transforming the entire planet into paper clips, as one famous thought experiment has imagined. It’s A.I.-supercharged corporations destroying the environment and the working class in their pursuit of shareholder value."

A great article about and from (I lost the original post here).

“We should all strive to be Luddites, because we should all be more concerned with economic justice than with increasing the private accumulation of capital”.

Ted Chiang: "As it is currently deployed, A.I. often amounts to an effort to analyze a task that human beings perform and figure out a way to replace the human being. Coincidentally, this is exactly the type of problem that management wants solved. As a result, A.I. assists capital at the expense of labor."

"Can A.I. ameliorate the inequities of our world other than by pushing us to the brink of societal collapse?

"If A.I. is as powerful a tool as its proponents claim, they should be able to find other uses for it besides intensifying the ruthlessness of capital.”

@pluralistic You're a writer. Did YOU realize how prophetic the short story "Liking What You See" in 's "Stories Of Your Life And Others" was? It will not be long now before we develop this procedure just to protect ourselves from scammers using AI generated spokespeople to manipulate us into scams and whatever else. printfriendly.com/p/g/BEknJk

“in the developed world[,] injustices committed by the state are far more serious than those caused by crime, by conventional criminality. The existing status quo involves things like vast wealth inequality and systemic racism and police brutality. And if you are really committed to justice, those are probably not things that you want to reinforce. Those are not things you want to preserve. But that’s what superheroes always do.

… one of the attractive things about the story where you reinforce the status quo is that you could tell endless sequels. Because the end of the story leaves you pretty much where you were at the beginning of a story. And so, yeah, you can tell the same story over and over again. Stories about overturning the status quo, it’s very difficult to tell a sequel. Maybe you can tell a sequel, but it will look radically different than the first story. So that makes it hard to sustain them the way that large media companies want.” —, nytimes.com/2021/03/30/podcast

@nus I kind of hoped that it would go the way of 's "The Lifecycle of Software Objects", and end up with a new version where the exported worlds could carry on - But by the looks of it, it didn't.

I may be missing a lot of internal and creator discussions (I certainly am, in fact since I don't ever look for them!) but at the moment, it seems dead-dead, never to go again.

After reading chapter 2 of the Bruegel book, which details his three paintings of the Tower of Babel, I switched to fiction and started on these Ted Chiang stories.

First one just happens to be "Tower of Babylon" – a terrific story in its own right, but after the art book it felt trippily like stepping right into Bruegel's painting.

nailed this back in 2017 (the same year of the Long Island Blockchain Company):

> There’s a saying, popularized by Fredric Jameson, that it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism. It’s no surprise that Silicon Valley capitalists don’t want to think about capitalism ending.
