i've been listening to podcasts feat. dr. tyson yunkaporta, an aboriginal australian scholar.

podcasters love his book "sand talk: how indigenous thinking can save the world" & he's been a fricken' hero answering all their q's.

the interviewers are often interested in the ideas & concepts, but i think they don't get that the stories/lessons are about the actual world! how to live in balance w/the actual world so we don't all die.

I’m always doing a lot of thinking. In the last weeks I have been pulling together a lot of my thoughts that have been more nebulous. Being in community with powerful love, and thinkers, even urban ceremonial people, and then immersion in thoughts of the land and ecologies - these set me in a place where things I have had on more of a sensory level, or threads of thought have actually come into visual and verbal space.

This is with a real, more than a hat tip to Stephen Svenson for discussions that pull a whole sense together. The visuality happened in daydreams after conversations with Sven in thinking about urban land space, food and land sovereignties. I find these important expressions for unpacking the western mindset and decolonizing my own worldview.

Surrealism was extremely influenced by Indigenous people and colonialism.

Lots to discuss here when it comes to the notion of discovery, cultural growth and change, the replication of culture, and appropriation. From art, to science, entire schools of thought changed with global colonialism. How much of the "enlightenment" expressed by Europeans and yt Americans (the whole of both continents) can be attributed to Indigenous people? Same with democracy, feminism, equity, scientific method, sociology, a total revolution in the European ideal coincides with the destruction and appropriation of thousands of global Indigenous cultures.

And so I begin another Trek across the stars. During the pandemic I binged Next Generation and DS9. Thoroughly enjoyed both. I watched Voyager off and on back in the day but have never seen the whole thing. As someone once said… Fun will Now Commence.

@pvonhellermannn thanks for sharing these threads and putting them in context of your thinking on the matter! By the sounds of it, the correct citing of sources seems to be the crux of the critique - is that right? If so, wouldn't it be the easiest thing to quote / refer to a group of people that have held this knowledge rather than (or at the very least in addition to) the (most likely white, male and perhaps colonially motivated) 'discoverer' of it? Giving credit to the people who invented and refined it over thousands of years, rather than the person who happened to write it down first; while simultaneously not devaluing this act of transferring either, as it helps creating visibility of the TEK for people outside the group of original knowledge holders and therefore lays the groundwork of broader practical application, that is such an important part of finding solutions.
