@jaz I learn things on the #fediverse rather than just argue with strangers. #TellEveryone
@jaz Because the numbers matter less than the community. For now, at least. #TellEveryone
@jaz
It's wonderful to have the algorithm be
Show me what I ask to see
Rather that
Show me what you want me to see
#telleveryone #bettersocialmedia #fediverse
Twitter connected you with all kinds of people I had no interest in knowing. It turned my feed into a combat zone that I felt I had to defend. It put me on other peoples feeds that were defending their turf and pitted me against others I didnt even want to know existed. Next thing I know, I am waking up in the morning hell bent on my declaration of war against everyone on Twitter invading my timeline and telling me things I didnt want to know.
I FULLY engaged.
I got kicked off three times before I didnt go back BECAUSE I FOUND MASTADON, where I only see posts by people Ive liked and what I said or posted isnt being weaponized for a coup.
#TellEveryone they dont have to be in the war zone. They can come over here to Mastodon, curate their own feed and when they spend time online they can use this medium as their social network. Mastodon is more like a social chat room instead of a weaponized algorithm looking to recruit you into their war.
@jaz Its a more varied, calmer and less shouty place to hang out! #TellEveryone
@jaz There is a lot less angst here and people actually want to talk to you about anything. #TellEveryone
@jaz I am absolutely loving the actual community here - engagement, discussion, and understanding.
#TellEveryone
@jaz so many reasons, but in a nutshell: The culture is a lot like Usenet in its golden era of the early 1990s. So many great things came out of that.
@jaz Social media without the shackles of weird algorithms, who and what you see is all down to you. Still finding my way so say hi. #TellEveryone
@jaz More people I want to be around, fewer people I don't want to be around, and also a great many pictures of birds. #TellEveryone
@jaz
Because people actually engage rather than shouting at each other.
Because moderation is taken seriously and the vast majority of posters are courteous.
Because I find myself smiling a lot more scrolling here than I do on Twitter.
OK, that's 3 - but I wanted to #TellEveryone
@jaz I get to genuinely interact with real people who share my interests in a very down-to -earth way
#TellEveryone
@jaz Because itβs way calmer and less doomy than the birdsite #TellEveryone
@jaz and so many beautiful/interesting photos with lots of people adding descriptive text of their images to make it #inclusive #TellEveryone
@jaz That itβs not a constant outrage machine full of the latest horrors (and imagined, projected horrors), and that when people do post about that stuff they usually put a content warning on it so you can prepare yourself. It feels kinder, calmer, more thoughtful. #TellEveryone
