I first read Novik's fiction last year, devouring her nine-volume #Temeraire series, a retelling of the #NapoleonicWars in a world where dragons are real. The Temeraire books have it all: swashbuckling hand-to-hand combat; grand, sweeping battles; a huge cast of beautifully realized characters; a brilliantly wrought geopolitics, and a through-line that is fantastically *tight*, plotted to a fare-thee-well:

Played a bit with Bing's AI image creator today and decided to make a picture of Capt. Will Lawrence from Naomi Novik's #Temeraire series. Not bad.

@pluralistic Well put and I would add that these books are tremendously well suited to reading aloud. Not all good books are, but wow. I just barely discovered this series in time to be able to read it to my children at bedtime. Aloud, the narrative voice reminds me of E Nesbit in its intimate charm and the deep affection for the characters that it evokes. Also Iskierka freaking rocks every scene she is in!
