My first Brook Trout expedition in West Virginia. Caught him with a yarn bug on my Dragontail Foxfire.

I feel that regular fly rods are more convenient for fishing small streams with overhanging trees.
For tenkara, I prefer streams with more open space. Without a reel, landing fish becomes more a problem than casting when there is no space to raise the rod. I often end up collapsing the rod while landing fish, which is very inefficient and cumbersome.
For small mountain streams, my current favorite is Sage VXP 3wt 7β9β π

5 leeches and a lyrebird later I bailed on a small seldom fished creek in #Melbourne 's Eastern Suburbs. Bow and arrow casts into super skinny water the only way. #Tenkara #Flyfishing
Good day.

Came across this old lean-to in the woods while traipsing around fishing for brook trout with a 6-foot #tenkara rod. The tiny stream is in the background. Someday this shelter may have a full moss roof. #mosstodon #flyfishing

A beautiful creek π
I need to do this more often (with a short tenkara rod in my backpack) for tenkara+cycling π

Recent snaps of the Howqua. Unfortunately flogged the night before we arrived. Plenty of spooked, but not too hungry fish.
Will be back later this year.

To get in deep, I use a bit more than usual amount of hi-vis Poly Pro McFlylon (froatant needed) on size 14ish dry flies, which become great suspension devices that can hold two small nymphs (sizes 18 - 14, even with brass beads) with a split shot (sizes 6 - 4)π

Although I don't use bobbers very often, I do prefer Thingamabobbers over Air-lock in their smallest sizes (1/2"). Air lock is a bit too chunky but it got a better system that prevents sliding. For Thingamabobbers, I use a sliding knot (with backing line) on a level leader to prevent a bobber from sliding down.
But when I need a bobber, I usually use a hi-vis dry fly as a bobber π

I love small stream fly fishing - I also love tenkara. Tenkara requires only a rod, line, and fly - no reel, usually no split shots or indicators. I love this simplicity. I often use only a few different flies, yes, simple. But the geography of Pennsylvania makes this approach often difficult π€ So, instead, I do regular fly fishing - but it is also relaxing and really enjoyable βΊοΈ

After maneuvering small streams, I felt that this creek was wide open with a lot of back-casting room π
There is a misconception that Tenkara is only for small streams. But tenkara needs open space because the rod is very long - tenkara really works well here, although I used a regular fly rod today π€

A prolific sunfish day at Stone Mountain Park. I also had two monster black crappie on the line, but they both got away from me. I will be back with heavier tackle.

Tenkara doesnβt have this issue at all β there are no guides π great for Winter fishing π
