Tikal was long the mightiest city, and today the stately ruins reflect their glory. Six temples with massive roof combs soar above the city, and they built them steep! 😮
.
But did non-Mayans rule this place? 🤔In 378 AD, Tikal's king Great Jaguar Paw died, the same day a non-Maya figure Fire is Born arrived - prob a general from , near modern Mexico City. It appears the northerners invaded Tikal, executed the king, and installed their own dynasty of rulers. 👑🪓👑

@chema 10000% this. I get that historians are squeamish about people colorizing black-and-white photos, I know how painstaking it is to create murals and reconstructions in museums, but I feel there’s a tremendous loss if that prevents the creation and dissemination of artwork like this that fire the imagination, that encourage laypeople to engage with the last without asking them to spend years in history graduate programs.

For example the Field Museum has this cool section in the room to give you the visual perspective of standing on the top of the main pyramid looking down the avenue (octodon.social/@22/10949622230 has a photo), and they use a big photo of the modern view, it would be a totally wild to commission an artist every few years to consult with experts to create a mural of what it may have looked like in 500 CE! Especially because the pillars they have on either side of the photo are period reconstructions.

In all I can never shake the disappointment at how our society devalues history and sharing history with all. Popular books, history courses in university, museums, and Netflix faux-documentaries all satisfy only the tip of the iceberg of public demand for detailed and factual historical analysis.

Tláloc (pron. Tla-loc) is one of the most important and formidable gods in the Aztec pantheon. He was considered the god of rain, water, lightning and agriculture. Tlaloc was seen as both a benevolent god providing life-giving rain but also as an unforgiving and destructive deity when he sent storms and drought.

@chema No doubt! The Southeastern Ceremonial Complex had an architectural and artistic style strikingly similar to that of metropolises, like you can see in this shell gorget, which is from but almost looks like it could be from .

The language also has, for example, a funny word for monkeys ("raccoon people" 😁), which may suggest Choctaw ancestors had traveled to southern cities and had to find ways to describe the animals there.

@waterwatchman I'm no expert but it seems there is still much much to discover about including what the tunnels were for. The tour guide I went with at outside said that site revealed (as well as one of earliest plumbing systems) tunnels that are still being excavated full of burial and other ceremonial chambers as well as water honouring practices. This would have been important also for crop production ❤️
