DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES
Literally years of my life have been spent taking in the moving image. Television and (especially) film. My memories of what I've watched are strangely as real to me as those in my day to day life in the material world. Sometimes they feel more real. Terence Davies' Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988), left such an impact on me. And this sequence in particular.

Terence Davies replied to me on Instagram. I'm so happy. I hope he really does write his own replies (or at least dictate them). One of my all-time heroes. His films changed my life. #TerenceDavies #Cinema #Liverpool #LGBTQ #director #UKcinema #workingclass #arthouse #film

I think it’s great that Terence Davies’ #film ‘The Long Day Closes’ is finally getting the appreciation it deserves. I saw from his social media posts that it’s being honoured at a French film festival (forget the name). It’s a shame it’s always tended to be denigrated in comparison to ‘Distant Voices, Still Lives’ - much as I love that that film too.

[1989] The Film Club - Airing on BBC 2 on Saturday nights and pre-dated Moviedrome by two years. Here, director Terence Davies ( Distant Voices, Still Lives, The House of Mirth and Benediction) introduces "2001- A Space Odyssey".

#TerenceDavies's deeply personal, fragmentary recalling of his childhood growing up in post-war Britain has all his long-standing preoccupations - loving mother, going to the picture show, religion, the view of the world through the window and burgeoning homosexuality. He shows these beautiful, sorrowful, happy moments w/ amazingly accomplished visual style. Long Day Closes is one of the most beaut films depicting childhood. It's a beautiful, cinematic experience that is full of warmth and hope.
It’s birthdays galore this week. I saw Simon Russell Beale on stage for the first time in 2018 (I think) in ‘The Lehman Trilogy’. What an introduction that was! I’d wanted to see him in the #theatre since his role as the rejected husband in Terence Davies’ #film ‘The Deep Blue Sea’. There’s a short scene in that in which the husband turns up with a birthday gift for his estranged wife. In a sense nothing happens, yet it’s heartbreaking. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/stage/2018/jul/13/the-lehman-trilogy-review-lyttelton-sam-mendes #SimonRussellBeale #TerenceDavies

#Film of the year has got to be #Benediction. I admit I’m biased: Terence Davies is my favourite director - #gay, #Liverpudlian, (a bit) grumpy, honest, unashamedly and somehow radically nostalgic, truly cinematic. #WW1 #poet #SiegfriedSassoon was a great choice of subject (though I can’t say I warmed to him) and the performances are beautiful. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-front-row/benediction-reviewed-the-bio-pic-as-radical-melodrama #arthouse #FilmOfTheYear #LGBTQ #TerenceDavies
