“Pedantic” is my middle name!

Yes, my full name is Truth Pedantic Sandwich, but that’s a bit of a mouthful, so I stick to Truth Sandwich. People mostly call me Sandwich, when they call me anything at all.

Revanchism seems to be more broad, and is concerned with relitigating past losses that they refuse to accept as legitimate. In a sense, the 1/6 coup was revanchist.

Irredentism is about wanting to unite petty kingdoms. Putin certainly sees Ukraine as just another Russian-speaking territory that, by all rights, belongs under the umbrella of Moscow.

So both fit, but irredentism is more precise, if perhaps less likely to be understood.

“Progressive conservative”?

“New Democrats”?

These political terms apparently make perfect sense in Canada, but read as nonsense in America.

Insert the standard line about two countries separated by a common language. Although, really, we’re separated by very distinct governments.

It also shows that words like “progressive” or “democrat” have very local meanings that don’t map well even to neighboring countries.

What's open and what's not in "open" ?

"We find that the terms ‘open’ and ‘open source’ are used in confusing and diverse ways, often constituting more aspiration or marketing than technical descriptor, and frequently blending concepts from both software and . This complicates an already complex landscape, in which there is currently no agreed on definition of ‘open’ in the context of AI."

Weird question...

At school I remember adjusting a spectroscope in physics class. It involved a process of alternating between two dials. Each adjustment would throw the other dial out so you had to switch, and then the first dial would be out (by less) etc. Eventually you home in on the correct setup for both.

I could have sworn this process had a name, but I've never been able to remember it. Did I imagine that? Is there a generic name for this adjustment process?

Reminder: a "boundary" is something you set for *yourself*. Like, "if you do X, I will do Y". The "I will do Y" part is the boundary.

"You can't do X" is not a boundary. It's a rule, an attempt to control another person. Don't let someone call you a "boundary violator" if you simply refuse to accept their rules for you.

The name for the algebraic structure consisting of a set \(A\) equipped with a binary operation \(f\colon A^2\to A\) which is not assumed to be commutative, associative, etc. has an interesting history. As far as I can tell, this sort of algebra was originally known as a "groupoid", and you can find recent literature using the term in that way. However, Nicolas Bourbaki called a set with a single binary operation a "magma" in his _Éléments de mathématique_ and this name came to be used when there might be confusion with the newer topological use of "groupoid" to mean a category whose morphisms are all invertible. A third contender is "binar". I don't know the history of this one but it seems reasonable to me.

I prefer "magma" myself. I don't know what a "lava" or a "volcano" should be nor have I had the audacity to try to name something like this in the literature. One reason I prefer "magma" is that I can talk about a set \(A\) equipped with a single \(n\)-ary operation \(f\colon A^n\to A\) as an "\(n\)-ary magma" (or just "\(n\)-magma" or even "magma").

Is it dehumanising to say “female to man to female” or similar? I don’t get why straight men call women “female” without using the same kind of terminology with males.

I find it disrespectful, because it makes it sound like women are just animals and not human. Not on the same level as men.

Plus it just gives me Tate vibes when a guy says that. Women are not objects.

Apparently I’m whining about this, according to my brother.
