I am celebrating the first day of Spring this year with on of my cherry blossom paintings. Though the Mayne Island Japanese Memorial Garden season of sakura is about a month away and the first plum blossoms are just starting to open, I want us all to be ready for this seasonal spring event with a special story about plein air painting shared in the alt notes of the painting image. On the easel today…

After six weeks of working on a larger canvas I am just not quite ready to share, I have started a 20 x16 inch oil on canvas of Arbutus Trees. Over the next couple of days I will finish it up wet-into-wet and then let it dry a bit possible before adding final highlights.

Artist notes: I was raised by trees, not because I didn’t have loving parents. But because I spent so much time alone in the company of trees. Trees are great company. This particular Maple tree is excellent council on the strength of persistence and creativity. She is a gentle woman tree who guards the trail and brushes me with her falling leaves as she lets go of the southwest coast November sky…..

Artist notes: On November 30, 2021 at 4:51 pm I was coming home from a friends and looked up to see the third in a parade of atmospheric rivers turning a bend overhead. I was so astonished that I pulled over to take a closer look and took a few reference images. I know right then and there that this beauty was going under the brush. Usually we do not get to see the power and size of these phenomena because the heavy rains is coming down all around us and visibility is poor. Not the case this time! People saw it all around the area from sea to shore.

The latest painting is still on the easel and it is nowhere near completed. But the canvas seems to have a presence that I can work with again tomorrow or the day after… or maybe both days. We shall see.
