Who were the first proponents of the water-to-land transition of vertebrates? Did the idea that tetrapods originate from fish precede the discovery of transition fossils? Were the discussions on land-to-water (e.g. ichthyosaurs origin) and water-to-land transitions contemporary?
I’m trying to place some late 18th/early 19th century science writing into context, but have no background in the history of science.

Like Puijila, Tiktaalik roseae is known from #Nunavut 🇨🇦, has an #Inuktitut name (meaning "large freshwater #fish"), and records an important #evolutionary transition, this time from #sea to #land. #Tiktaalik shares traits with both fish and #tetrapods, making it a close relative of all of us land-living #vertebrates. The #endoskeleton formed by the #aciculae and supported by many muscles is quite unique to polychaete annelids and represents the only example outside the #tetrapods of animals with a trunk appendages rigidified by an endoskeleton. Aciculae evolved in stem errant #annelids in the Early #Ordovician indicating the deep ancestry of these structures, predating tetrapod limbs.

Moving up in age range a bit, #OutOfTheBlue can be thought of as a spiritual successor to #GrandmotherFish. It similarly seeks to educate it readers on the basics of #evolution & #Phylogeny, but is pitched at a slightly older audience, and focuses a little more on the origin of #tetrapods.

#paleontology #fossils #evolution #Devonian #QikiqtaniaWakei #TiktaalikRoseae An article published in the journal "Nature" reports the identification of a precursor of the #tetrapods that lived on today's Ellesmere Island, in Canada, in the Devonian period, about 375 million years ago. A team of researchers named it #Qikiqtania wakei and illustrated similarities and differences with #Tiktaalik roseae.
