Traces of Texas reader Karen Doskocil shared this circa 1950 photo of a classic Texas scene. This is an old country store that was owned by Karen's aunt and uncle, Redin and Joyce Burt. It was located on South Covington Street in Hillsboro, Texas. FANTASTIC!

Moon Young was a Cleveland, Texas photographer for over 50 years. Traces of Texas reader James Howard Hefley has been scanning a ton of Moon's photos and kindly shared this one. When Moon Young first started out, his studio was in the back room of his house. This cold weather we're having reminded James of this photograph Moon took in the early 1950's of a snowstorm rarely --- if ever ---- seen in Cleveland.

Thank you, James. Super duper!

Traces of Texas reader Sydney Levesque shared this nice photo of Dallas Cowboy great Bob Lilly (2nd from right) standing next to Sydney's dad, Charles Schumann (far right), after a fishing tournament at Toledo Bend circa 1980. Bob actually won the tournament. Sydney's dad, who was a lifetime Cowboys fan, died on Dec. 3rd but left a lifetime of great memories.

I can't get over the remarkable clarity/condition that this circa 1895 photo of Main Street in Fort Worth is in. Practically every sign readable and a beautiful horse!

"The human mind is a wonderful thing, it starts working from before you're born and doesn't stop till you sit down to write a song."

---- Roger Miller, born 85 years ago today in Fort Worth, Texas and writer of classic songs like "King of the Road," "Dang Me," and many others. Traces of Texas reader Kevin Donahue took this photo of Roger and Willie Nelson at John T. Floore's country store in Helotes back in 1975. Thank you, Kevin!

An unknown young woman in Bryan, Texas circa 1895. I'm drawn to it because of her relaxed, open pose, which is so informal for those days. Folks normally appeared much more formal and stiff back then. Her dress is super, too.

One of the domino tables at Mynar's Bar in West, Texas. Notice the wear patterns from (probably) decades of playing 42 on it. Those folks were pretty serious about their 42, as I found out a couple of hours after I took this shot. A friendly place for a cold beer, no doubt. Classic Texas dive bar decor, replete with George Strait neon sign and cheesy beer posters.

Traces of Texas reader Justin Teltschik shared this nice early 1900s photo of his great uncle, Herman Sachs, with his Pearl beer wagon in Weimar, Texas. What's not to love here? I like nice horses and I like cold beer, even Pearl, so this is right in my wheelhouse!

Thank you, Justin. Super duper!

El Paso police in an undated photo. I THINK this was taken in the 800 block of Rim Road but can't say with certainty. Nice Ford Galaxy. I'm told it's a 1963 model.

Elm Street in Dallas on a postcard that was sent in 1905. Dallas sounds like it was a swinging place back then!

Traces of Texas reader William McNutt was so thoughtful as to submit this remarkable 1912 photo of the second Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana. The hotel built above it allowed travelers from around the world to taste the famous fruitcake and take it home.

Thank you, William! Awesome photo!

1939: the Red Onion Cafe in Crystal City, Texas. I'm thinking that "cow-boy-stew" was probably pretty good!

Brakeman running after a train in the Texas Panhandle, 1943. I love this because it shows how flat, treeless, and desolate the landscape there truly is. And also because of trains.

I've put it off but it's time to get into the Christmas spirit, y'all. Charles Brown was born in Texas City back in 1922. He graduated from Prairie View A&M and was a chemistry teacher before following his true calling. He passed away in 1999.

Comanche Chief Ten Bears as photographed by Alexander Gardner, probably in 1871. Ten Bears was almost 80 years old here. Per his own account, he spent almost 50 years on the plains before ever encountering a white person. What a remarkable face!

Along a brick road (The Bankhead Highway) between Mineral Wells and Weatherford, 1930s. That looks to be a US Department of Agriculture car.

A GORGEOUS photo!
