Houston's first female court jury [2/2]
In June of 1959, recently elected District Judge William Sears McGee (1917 - 2006) selected the first all-woman jury in the Harris County Civil Courts.
According to a June 1959 Houston Chronicle article:
"Attorneys took one look at Harris County's first all-woman jury, had a hurried hudle with Judge Sears McGee and settled the case." π€£

Anna Johnson Dupree was an extremely important Houstonian who never received the recognition she deserved during her lifetime.
Unbeknownst to many, the work she and her husband have done for Houston's Black community still resonates today.

Bishop College Cooking Class [3/3]
John Henry "Jack" Yates is my #1 favorite all-time Houstonian.
He and his family began building and nurturing Houston's Black community almost immediately after emancipation.
Rev. Yates is long overdue for a statue in the center of the city, but unfortunately all I have is this short write-up I did a while back.

Erie D. Yates (1892-1971), daughter-in-law of Houston trailblazer, Rev. John Henry "Jack" Yates, is seated 2nd from the right in the front row.
She was the wife of Rutherford B. H. Yates (1880-1944), who himself graduated from Bishop College 5 years prior in 1905.

Well written article about Texas' division powers. Interesting to think that Texas could or would separate into separate States.

William McDonald (aka Gooseneck Bill) from #FortWorth Texas was the state's first Black millionaire. His bank survived the Depression when many did not and he was able to expand into other avenues of business. He used his wealth to support his local community in the early 1900s.

Thanks to the bestselling "Devil in the White City", the story of serial murderer H.H. Holmes and his Chicago "murder castle" is somewhat well-known. What is less well-known is that Holmes built another near-identical "murder castle" in Fort Worth, Texas on land acquired from a victim. Although urban legends about the place persist, he is not known to have murdered anyone at this location.

From an anonymous reader, a photo of Quanah Parker and one of his wives, Tonarcy. I've posted many photos of Quanah and one of Tonarcy but I've never seen this before. Quanah has got to rank as one of the most fascinating figures in Texas history. The original photo is in the collection of the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Van Horn, Texas, which is on I-10 about 100 miles southeast of El Paso, is named for the man shown here, James Judson Van Horn, who commanded an army garrison at the Van Horn Wells beginning in 1859 but was taken prisoner by the Confederates after the Civil War broke out. He was a military man his an entire life, a life filled with action, adventure and hardship. It would make a great Hollywood movie.

Farrah Fawcett's high school yearbook photo in Corpus Christi, Texas, 1965. I have a friend who knew her during her subsequent days at UT Austin and he said that she really was ALL THAT but that "she pretended not to know it, even though she must have been aware." That hair!

Traces of Texas reader Dan Steltch saw a post that I wrote earlier about watermelons and kindly shared this 1907 postcard depicting men carving baby watermelons in Texas. I'm not sure why they didn't go for the full-grown ones. Maybe they wouldn't fit on the card.
Thanks, Dan. Wunderbar!

@TexasCre8ive I find it gratifying to visit these old pioneer places. Rural Texas is a time capsule, but it's struggling. The urbanization I deplore in Austin is nowhere to be found in the country. If there is a family cemetery, you can just soak up the atmosphere. Check out volunteer run website called "Find a Grave". It's very helpful. People upload photos and stories there. I found a whole family tree branch I did not know about that way.
