#TfNSW is working on the next stage of the #Newcastle #LightRail alignment.
Given that the existing route really just replaced a functional heavy rail line, this would be Newcastle's first significant piece of new #PublicTransport infrastructure in....100 years? more?
There isn't too much in the release but this bit suggests it'll run past an upgraded Broadmeadow station (which should have been 'Newcastle Interchange' to begin with) and out to Marathon stadium.
“Preserving the corridor will also include work around the Broadmeadow regionally significant growth area, with the Department of Planning and Environment leading an exercise for the redevelopment of the Broadmeadow area, including housing and a major sport and entertainment hub.”
Hopefully we'll know more in a few months!

Unconfirmed report that Heath St cycleway demolition has been delayed by Canada Bay Council for a week, or possibly the end of the month. As of 8:16am there was no equipment present.
There has been a huge uproar - the Sydney Morning Herald article is number 1 nationally.

Randwick Council (Sydney) is seeking feedback on creating new cycling and walking connections along Anzac Parade, along with new public spaces.
The council is looking for ideas on improving walking and cycling along the corridor and creating new, inviting open spaces for recreational use!

In NSW Transport for NSW own research shows 30kmh saves lives.
> There is a 10 per cent risk that a pedestrian will be killed if hit by a modern car at 30km/h. At a 50km/h impact speed, the risk increases to 80 per cent.

RT David Martin in #BayBUG FB group (public), re. Heath St cycleway removal: (1/2 in 🧵):
Canada Bay Council on Tuesday night voted to accept Traffic Committee’s recommendation to remove the uphill cycleway in Heath St Five Dock, just installed in August 2022.
Note that TfNSW voted on TC against the recommendation, refuting the arguments put forward (re road width, accessing driveways, sight lines at Heath/Rickard). Transport strongly supported the benefits of the cycleway for bike riders and in slowing motor vehicle traffic on Heath St. Transport "offered design support to assist Council in developing a concept design that balances all user requirements" and that "Council consider deferring the decision on removal of the [cycle] path pending the outcome of a design review conducted in partnership with Council". This offer was repeated in a motion from Cllr Jago(Greens)during consideration of the TC recommendation but did not receive a seconder. (NB Both Labour councillors were absent.)
There were five speakers against TC's recommendation: from BayBUG, Bicycle NSW and the [Mortlake-Cabarita]Peninsula Action Group.
The lack of support from the Mayor (Tsirekas) and the TC chair (Cllr Megna) for anything cycling was palpable. After our first speaker presented, the Mayor asked the rest of us whether we really had anything in addition to say. We all claimed our 5 minutes.

The City of Sydney local pedestrian, cycling and traffic committee will vote on the 16th of February whether to make 158 one way streets legal for contraflow cycling (in the opposite direction of cars). This would provide a useful network of low traffic cycling routes complimentary to the necessary separated infrastructure.
The criteria for selecting the one way streets is:
- sight distance free of obstructions;
- traffic volumes and vehicles speeds are low; and
- road geometry does not present an unacceptable risk
759 submissions were received from 337 individuals and 4 community and bike user groups with 579 responses supporting the proposal, 18 providing neutral feedback and 172 opposing. Sydney Morning Herland reporting the NSW government is subsidising road tolls by $500 million, backdated to July 2022. Each driver can receive up to a $750 payment. These are toll roads operated by a private company, so are in effect a subsidy for Transurban.
> The premier defended taxpayer subsidies for drivers, and pointed out that public transport is also heavily subsidised.
Unbelievable.

A side project I've been tinkering on lately - a proof of concept map rendering streets down to the individual lanes, to assist cyclists picking safe routes and support advocacy for reallocating road space for more efficient modes (as supported by the TfNSW Future Transport Strategy).
I wrote the initial vector tileserver from scratch in one afternoon in Typescript, calling the JS bindings for the Rust osm2streets code compiled to wasm. It generates GeoJSON which is then returned by Koa as a protobuf.
The TfNSW Future Transport Strategy states "We will focus on getting more out of our existing investments, by reallocating road space to more efficient modes of transport like buses, walking, cycling and micromobility devices."

Today I spotted what appears to be an electric cargo bike with a petrol generator mounted on the rear rack, humming along quietly!
I wonder if the regulators have thought of that!
Obviously the optimal solution would be installing electric chargers on the street for bike couriers and the wider public, but if the bike is street legal (25kph max motor assist/pedal assist/<250watts) and only charges the battery when parked, is it any worse than the dozens of cars usually sitting in traffic on the street? Not sure what to make of it.

As a side project I built Sydney Transit Graph – a visualisation of real-time Sydney bus congestion. Each line on the graph (a Marey chart) represents a bus completing its route (percentage) over time.
It's open source on Github - let me know if you have any ideas for analysis or use!
