Here's the TGV to Paris, leaving at 10:22. Next to it the TER we came in from Grenoble, arriving at 10:20 and departing at 10:23. Could have made a great connection - but didn't. Well, not our problem, we're staying here for the moment.

C'était une excellente idée en juin de réserver ce week-end même si le réveil a sonné beaucoup trop tôt.

One additional problem for Spanish-French train connections is a cockfight between RENFE and SNCF.
It's a longer tragedy in several acts. RENFE is definitely the less efficient company of the two (Symptomatic: You can't even look up connections on their web 🙄). But in this recent drama, respondibility is probably at least shared.
If somebody knows better, please correct me:

In the EU (remember, some stuff in the EU is nice, but a lot also neoliberal bullshit), the countries are "encouraged" to privatise national rail companies and to allow competition.
The French SNCF became annoyed by RENFE trains starting to cover some of the more revenue-generating routes*.
So, SNCF just kicked RENFE out and didn't allow them to operate on French rails anymore. RENFE would have liked to do the same, but luckily for the cross-border connection, they couldn't.
In Spain, the infrastructure is operated by ADIF, RENFE runs only the trains (as France is one of the big players in the EU, SNCF is allowed to retain the authority over the tracks and to play both roles).
So the two broke ties and stopped any cooperation. So no mutual ticket selling or anything...

Things are starting to improve again, apparently. RENFE ads are announcing "breaking: there will be a new connection Barcelona-Paris" (in reality, just starting to recover the connections that four years ago were totally normal).

* here is obviously a flaw in my version of the story, as SNCF has apparently less of a problem with DB and others...

Good to know:
- next time I'll use #interrail tickets. #TGV from Lyon to Barcelona was 170 euro. I hope that the taxes included will not be used for subsidizing kerosene on R***air flights🤔
- there was no #train from Montpellier to Lyon after 9 pm so they directed me to a hotel. This resulted in half a day delay instead of a few hours. Plan flexibly... 😅
- Poland, Czech Republic, Austria , Switzerland and Germany have frequent trains. Spain and Italy a bit more like France. And France... 🤪

Pay attention:
- Some window seats are next to the window frame. Annoying when #travelling through scenic regions 😭
- first minute bookings with Czech trains often has cheaper first class than second 🤣
- Polish trains have good #restaurants and might operate even in Austria en route from Poland

Workarounds:
- when travelling through 3 countries, say Warsaw to Paris, buy the ticket in the middle country if the starting country doesn't offer tickets until the destination country 😁
- if the night train is booked in one direction it might be free the other way. In the summer they're often booked out🥵
- advanced options allow you to add an artificial stop. I once went from Croatia to Berlin and had a lunch and some rest in Salzburg🥰

#tgv: +30 min auf 3Std Fahrtzeit - am nächsten Tag hatte ich eine Mail von TGV wegen Erstattung bei Verspätung

Und der #TGV nach Frankfurt ist super ausgelastet. Sogar in der ersten Klasse.
Im Zugteil der nach Deutschland fährt und nicht in Straßburg endet, wird hauptsächlich deutsch gesprochen. #CrossBorderRail

In Deutschland ist der #TGV ja immer das Beispiel für heilen Bahnverkehr. Aber läuft nicht immer alles rund. Gestern gingen die Anzeigen am Zug nach Barcelona nicht. Es gab eine defekte (Innen-)Tür. Das WLAN, bzw. der Uplink war die ganze Zeit eher instabil, richtig schlimm ab der spanischen Grenze.
Bei der Abfahrt hatte der Zug zehn Minuten Verspätung. Der bis zu 30 Minuten anwuchs.
Die Einfahrt in Barcelona Sants wurde erst angesagt, als der Zug im Bahnhof zum stehen kam.

You can see the prices are not the cheapest but also reasonable! I paid 5.95€ for a croissant, a cup of fresh orange juice (it was good 🍊) and a cup of oat milk latte. Not bad right?

I guess 35€ next to Barcelona-Sants only buys you the shittiest hostel... you don't even need pictures: bunk beds, shared showers, men doing men snot noises. I even had to make my own bed 🥱

It's not that bad but I will never stay just for one night in a hostel alone with this amount of luggage again!

But I took a shower, brushed my teeth 🪥 and I'm ready to go to sleep to wake up early and get on my #Barcelona-#Paris #TGV!
