#The1975 aren't heroes of Malaysian #LGBTQ representation, but I think sometimes as humans our boundries for us-vs-them aren't drawn on national or racial or religious lines, maybe in this case the boundary is LGBTQ solidarity

Or maybe it was just a drunk rock star who wasn't really thinking about anyone else at all

But like I said before, if a band speaking out against repressive anti-LGBT laws and gay kissing on stage gets a festival shut down by the government, the problem isn't the band

There's a specific kind of liberal #racism and I wish I knew what it was called

It's when Mostly White Mostly Western (TM) people excuse aggregious repression and human rights violations as 'It's their culture and we should respect that'

Low key, the subtext reads the human rights of non-white, non-western people don't actually matter and aren't worth the effort or risk of making a fuss

In other words, #The1975 should've showed up, played their set & cashed their check, like good white boys

It's fair to discuss if a foreign, white band making this kind of statement has more protection than an average Malaysian #LGBTQ+ person -- but if they do, the problem here isn't white, western privilege

Also fair to discuss if this was a hamfisted #WhiteSaviour stunt

but #The1975 didn't invite themselves to a Malaysian music festival and then force their way on stage to kiss man on man as a political statement

They were invited to be there by people who for sure knew their pro-LGBTQ stance

As a foreigner there's no carte blanche to disobey laws in a country you're visiting--as many Western tourists have learned

Was it likely #The1975 would probably just get thrown out of Malaysia, not immediately arrested, then tried & sentenced to years in Malaysian prison and/or caning for gay kissing on stage?

Sure

But it wasn't a foregone conclusion and it wasn't an action without personal risk

Going to a foreign country and openly defying repressive human rights laws is never risk free
