To be honest, I really don't care about #TheAlgorithm being released.

I want to see the SRE diagrams and design documents, because after months of that monkey hammering on it, the servers mostly work.

That, right there, is system resilience.

So apparently Twitter is indeed open-sourcing their Algorithm. Good for them.

I posted the same picture of my quilt to Instagram, the Making App, and Mastodon today.

On Instagram: I have 448 followers. 7 people liked the photo. Four of those are people I know in real life, the others are internet friends who I interact with somewhat regularly.

On Making: I have 54 followers. 13 people liked the photo. None of them are people I know in real life.

On Mastodon: I have 322 followers. 39 people liked the post, 9 boosted it. 2 of them are people I know in real life, I recognize only a few other names.

Now, my Instagram account is older than the other two so I probably have more inactive followers there, but that's still kind of a jarring difference. It's been pretty noticeable that they just don't actually share my photos with people and haven't since reels were introduced -- it's clear someone's bonus relies on reels getting more engagement so they're rigging the game.

Making is fun because it's small and targeted so a lot of people, myself included, just browse the timeline and look at everyone's posts, or posts related to their selected crafts. Followers don't matter so much there.

And for Mastodon: thanks 9 people who boosted my photo & people who follow hashtags. You're all better than any commercial algorithm and I'm glad to not feel like I'm shouting into the void. As much as I remind myself that my public social media is mostly a love letter to my mother and a tool for making US border crossings easier (cybersecurity experts are a lot less threatening if you look them up and see knitting photos), I'm absolutely not immune to getting a kick out of every time someone sends me a little digital heart. So thank you, and here's some hearts:

Srsly. I follow TWO users (ironicaly) on #twitter. I refresh my #ForYou view and *its entirely different. *Its not like those two have posted in the last 20 seconds, the algorithm is just randomly picking garbage from the past week to throw up there. What horseshit.

Media companies who posted excerpts to FB, along with links to their sites on the real internet were rewarded with *floods* of traffic, as their posts were jammed into the eyeballs of millions of users who never asked to see them. Media companies and advertisers went all-in, integrating FB surveillance beacons in their presence on the real internet, hiring social media specialists who'd do #PlatformKremlinology in order to advise them on the best way to please #TheAlgorithm.

Ich hab via #Bandcamp mal in #MasterBootRecord reingehört und die bewegen sich so zwischen #MachinaeSupremacy (vor allem #JetsNGuns Ära) und #TheAlgorithm. Ab und zu mal ganz gut, muss aber nicht dauernd.

It felt like my two choices were to pick one or a few platforms and devote my efforts to #PlatformKremlinology, trying to figure out what words, subjects or formats would cause #TheAlgorithm to block the people who'd subscribed to my feed from seeing it; or to start a standalone website, which no one would ever see, but which I would control.

Facebook stopped showing readers the articles publications ran, tuning #TheAlgorithm to suppress posts from publications unless they paid to "boost" their articles to the readers who had *explicitly subscribed to them and asked Facebook to put them in their feeds.*

Now, Facebook started to cram more ads into the feed, mixing payola from people you wanted to hear from with payola from strangers who wanted to commandeer your eyeballs.

Outlets that *don't* participate in Facebook lose out, and so they join Facebook, start shoveling their content into it, hiring #SEO Kremlinologists to help them figure out how to please #TheAlgorithm, in hopes of gaining a permanent, durable source of readers (and thus revenue) for their site.
