Over the past few months, we've seen people insist that acting & writing aren't a "real job" and writers & actors aren't "regular people." In my latest, I challenge this idea and, more importantly, I share how this concept came to be: incandescere.com/post/because-

Had the pleasure of seeing at theatre this afternoon. Great performances, challenging but well worth it. I hope you can catch it.

We're seeing a lot of common misconceptions thrown around social media regarding the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike. Today, I'm tackling the one that implies that artists, actors and writers somehow aren't "regular people." Check out my thoughts & feel free to share yours: incandescere.com/post/because-

Talk about throwing yourself into the art: even if she weren't so gorgeous, her passion and dynamism would exert a magnetic attraction on the viewer, which makes Giovanni Boldini's "The Mondona Singer" an excellent illustration of the power of vibe.

Every now and then, you get to experience a play where you feel as if it was especially written for you. It resonates with you on a level you didn't expect and it lives with you long after the curtain falls. This review is about such a play. incandescere.com/post/heres-to

With only 3 days before it bids Broadway goodbye, I'm sharing my thoughts on the long overdue revival of The Sign In Sidney Brustein's Window, and why this work should join the long list of American classics revived time & time again. incandescere.com/post/heres-to

Art girls are the best girls; so it is with these two wholesome-looking women in Hans Volkmer's "A Beautiful Melody". Whatever tune the pianist is playing looks like it's sad, even lonesome, but her friend really likes it I think. 🙂

The girl in this Wilhelm Kray painting has the right spirit: roam out into the mists, throw clothes away, perch your lovely fair self on a seaside cliff, and make art meant only for those who dance to the music of the spheres.

In discussions about my career swing from to , I get a lot of “you must’ve loved science in school, good on you for rediscovering your passion!”

Um, no. I wasn’t enamoured by science, nor “gifted”, and I dropped the STEM subjects like hot bricks as soon as I could do so.

We do ourselves a disservice by insisting on natural affinity and inherent interest when considering how we engage ourselves. Far more important is to consider your personal contribution to helping others.

For all my art loving friends, I recommend the book, Your Brain on Art. It’s a bit heavy on the physiology but describes in depth the new study of ‘neuroarts’…Posits that the arts are essential for healthy brains. But then, ya’ll probably knew that:-)

I found 'Tár' to be a most brilliant film, that I hated. I hated everything about the character, & everything that it had to say about art from the perspective of an artist of "high art".

Like- um, everything, elitism has destroyed art. The distinction btw high & low art is a classist, racist, misogynist, sexist, colonial (by way of appropriation & recuperation) projection onto a universally human activity, both in its creation & its appreciation, to disenfranchise the most of us from the least (in all regards) of us. If we've learned nothing of elites, it's that they have very little (if any) real appreciation of art. This is directly linked to the downturn in schools of art & the fostering of new artists, but broadly, the humanities, which should be the fertile ground for critical analysis, & appreciation of art. The humanities is the place in which we should be arguing about why this or that is important in the context of our lived experiences as individuals, cultures & societies.

Lydia Tár is the avatar of this ongoing process & everything wrong with it.

René Xavier Prinet's "Between Friends" is one of the few depictions of balls that really captures the whirlwind feeling of the dance floor, of being one with your partner. All the dancers being women adds a lot more intrigue, as does that sly look from the pianist...
