“Enshittification...when tech platforms offer a service that’s genuinely helpful or unique & subsidize the cost for users in order to hook them.

Once users are dependent, the companies 'abuse' them, squeezing out revenue by either jacking up prices or surveilling users & selling the data." Doctorow

48) Tom Nichols at does an excellent job in detailing what is at stake in , quite simply will be on the ballot.

has provided a blueprint for another presidency which is a model for strongman despotism. Should that plan be implemented, there will be no easy recovery in reestablishing the rule of law.

The Local-News Crisis Is Weirdly Easy to Solve

"In the 2000s, after its local paper shut down, Bell, California, a low-income community, raised the pay of the city mgr to $788k & the police chief's to $457k. The LA Times eventually exposed the graft & several ended up in prison. Prosecutors accused them of costing at least $5.5m thru their inflated salaries approved at municipal mtgs. Imagine if even 1 reporter w/ a salary of $60k had been in attendance?"

Nice summary of the current state of LLMs in a non-technical sense. My observation is that the bloom quickly falls from the rose once you start working with them regularly. They are repetitive, make silly mistakes and frequently don’t save the time you hoped they would. What they aren’t is creative or surprising.

I highly recommend this Atlantic article. Interesting from top to bottom. I don't know if it is behind a paywall. If it is, please accept my apology and let me know how to do this differently in the future.

This article focuses on a small handful of people who genuinely get the economic pain points of the rural working class and envision a path forward.

Here's a quote:

""""
Murphy is a repeat provocateur. In July, he tweeted that “there are a lot of social conservatives who believe in populist economic policies, and it would be a good idea to have those people a part of a Democratic/left coalition and accept a bit more intra-movement friction on culture issues as a consequence.”
""""

“The bottom line is that Donald Trump both “engaged in” “insurrection or rebellion” and gave “aid or comfort” to others engaging in such conduct, within the original meaning of those terms as employed in Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment. If the public record is accurate, the case is not even close. He is no longer eligible to the office of Presidency, or any other state or federal office covered by the Constitution.”

Maybe the most vile thing has ever published. Only enjoyable part was when the author got screwed over by one of her millionaire clients, whose boots she had been all too happy to lick, up to that point. And all of the sudden she grows a conscience because Donald Trump said some nasty things about Mexicans? You think no rich person ever exploited a Mexican until Trump came around? Please.

Really interesting piece about a privileged white girl who got used to not hearing "no", faced some unspeakable tragedies, and is now taking it out on the rest of us.

"Orbán’s fantasy theory menu includes: liberals rule the world, a values campaign tht denies gay men & women a place in the family, protectionist economic policies that transfer public assets to party insiders. Add to this 1-party rule that dismantles checks/balances, a politics that defines all opponents as enemies of the nation, & a vision of cultural struggle that identifies schools/universities as a crucial battleground for the control of future generations."

'This past June, the library & publishers’ assocs reissued 'The Freedom to Read' on its 70th anniversary, a manifesto signed by scores of publishers, libraries, literary groups, civil-liberty orgs, authors. And yt many of those institutional signatories —includ'g the 'Big 5' publishing conglomerates— often violate its stand, maybe nt even aware they’re doing so. It’s worth askg why the American literary world in 2023 is less able to uphold its principles than in 1953."
