Readinng John Higgs’ Love and Let Die which examines England and Englishness through the prism of The Beatles and James Bond.

I’m about a quarter through and it’s excellent.

Higgs refers to the “England” of the wealthy as the Norman Continuity Empire and describes it as “a cuckoo placed in the nest of physical England, claiming an outsized share of resources”.

I have a kind of theory ... The best creatives are not ones who are consistently good, but are ones who create so much that they can't fail to at least create some good stuff.

Examples would be the likes of or or or who wrote loads of song, not all of which are good.

like (probably) (although I've only read a few of his books but I'm sure there are plenty of stinkers). And other prolific writers.

When say "a teen" I mean a very young teen. almost raised me, but I did, to my surprise, outgrow them. I never outgrew / Simon & Garfunkel though. There are even still some "hardcore"-like albums fro my youth I still listen to. It is odd how selective age is on musical taste. I always loved , but only later in life really began to absorb it and become knowledgeable. I did go through a massive , folk-blues period in my early through late twenties.

When I was a teen I "inherited" several originally printed vinyl records from . At that time, there were still used record shops where you could still get originally printed Beatles records for about $10 each. Yes, in great condition, too. I had most of them. Friends had many as well. I also had tapes and CDs and later the remastered versions. There was nothing, nothing, that came close to the originally printed vinyl. Get them if you love The Beatles. I outgrew the 4 boys.

Anyone can track down and buy the original . It is really only impressive if you bought it when it first came out.

Besides, remastered albums are not such a bad thing. At least with and . Remasters in those genres are most often improvements that are necessary. While not always true, is often better.

Yes, that is not true 100% of the time. should have never been remastered. Those are a nightmare.

Today’s listening is ‘With the Beatles’, the 1963 album by The Beatles.

This was their second long-player, released some eight months after their first.

There are 7 Lennon/McCartney originals, plus George’s first song and the album is then filled out with 6 cover versions.

It's hard to be fair to this album from 60 years distance, but of the original songs only ‘All My Loving’ really cuts the mustard for me and hints at the greatness that was to come…
