Pele was the first truly great, worldwide sports superstar that I became aware of growing up. He was poetry in motion, and watching his game was the first time I understood that one could employ both power and finesse, control and sheer power of will. He is a legend with few equals. RIP Pelé, what an extraordinary player. I’m much too young to have seen him play during his prime, but I remember as a kid watching him a little bit with the NY Cosmos, and of course (randomly) in John Huston’s WWII soccer movie VICTORY. The joy and passion he brought to soccer, and the “jogo bonito” revolution of the game that he helped create, changed soccer forever, and for the better.
