I ran my 1st in-person session of #theblackhack last weekend using the prison break adventure I've been working on. It exceeded even my high expectations. The group was all used to #5e and all the rules and apps, and by the end we were all enjoying the paper character sheets stained with food, the light rules, the sheer player shenanigans. Imagination ruled the day. 10/10, will never run the Hasboro game again. #ttrpg
#RPGaDay2023 Day 31: „Favourite RPG of all-time"
Argh…this is a tough one. If I take the time i actually played specific games as a measure, the answer must be: variations of #dnd, old school variants for the most part, retro clones, and modern hacks such as #TheBlackHack #DCC #ShadowDark and #FiveTorchesDeep. I also include games with recognizable #dnDNA in my most favourite-bag (#Mörkborg etc.).

Putting finishing touches on my prison break intro session. Down, for the traditional escape-through-forgotten-tunnels option, if the party is heavy on magic or geared for traditional combat. Some fun crumbled rooms and dungeon puzzles that way. Up, through the heavily staffed fortress, if they're going sneaky and/or charismatic and want to steal some art. #ttrpg #TheBlackHack
Designing a prison break for my opening session. So cliche and forced, yes, but Ithin I see an opportunity for a smooth intro to the new mechanics system. Plus I've never run one before, and it's better to do it at the opening to bring plot elements together than later, where it can feel *really* railroad-y.
*fondling the One Ring* After all, why not? Why shouldnt I self-publish my campaign world? #ttrpg #TheBlackHack
In other #ttrpg news, one of my players enjoys our game using #TheBlackHack so much they sprang to buy me the 2nd edition PDF. I, in turn, enjoyed it so much I ordered the physical book, because hooray for print media.
For the first time since the old blue box I found at a flea market, I read a rule book from beginning to end. It surprised, inspired, and delighted.
The existence of an inn where the party can stay the night implies the existence of a place called an outt that they can only leave.

Hey fun thread!
I currently run a game using #TheBlackHack basic rules. It's been a big change for me and my players but a lot of fun.
DND5e has lost most of its appeal for me as a DM but I still play in a game or two.
Otherwise, in my games I think a lot about colonialism and capitalism and history and creative governments, and mechanics-wise, I'm still very interested in the "Old School" approach, the lighter the better.
Tonight was our third session of #TheBlackHack running Against The Cult of the Reptile God. It went pretty great! #ttrpg #osr #dnd

Infravision was an old hack of The Black Hack that I wrote and ran maybe 5-6 years ago.
I no longer use or maintain it, but a couple folks came to my website looking for it recently and found the link broken, so I've uploaded it to Itch.io.
In case anyone else here is interested in it, here are the links:

But, caveat emptor: This is OGL material, so if Hasbro gets an itchy litigation finger again...

There's
which has #LiminalHorror #MorkBorg #MacchiatoMonsters #TheBlackHack #Mothership ooh and #OSE or #OldSchoolEssentials
Which are all #TTRPG and #IndieTTRPG which is very cool but I've got you down as a Cultural Consultant and artist?
You can have as many labels as you like, but I didn't know you did all this without digging in to your profile.

@lolbat I've been looking at #BlackSwordHack myself. It's a hack of #TheBlackHack which itself is a hack of 5e. Both are good options for similar, more streamlined rules with heroic player characters.
If heroic PCs aren't what you'relooking for, I like Mark of the Odd games (like #IntoTheOdd ) the most similar version to 5e is #IntoTheDungeon:Revived
#blackswordhack #theblackhack #IntoTheOdd #intothedungeon
@darkade I’ve yet to actually play it, but I’ve got the 2nd edition hardcover, and man, it just *looks* so cool!
I know it's not like #TheBlackHack is underrated. But everyone seems to take it and, well hack it, and use its best ideas. And that's fine, that's explicitly what the game suggest you do with it... BUT
This is good, this is honestly one of the best rpg books I've ever read, which means the game clicks, the book is well written, and it presents ideas that are actionable and usable. At this point I'd say it's
1. Apocalypse World
2. Nahual
3. The Black Hack
4. DCC
@phf @lonehorizons Agree, death at 0 hp can be a bummer, but there are some modern #dnd variants which have come up with much cooler approaches than 5e. Systems, in which combat is dangerous and daring, without characters biting the dust all the time. Here I’m thinking of #FiveTorchesDeep, #WorldsWithoutNumber, and #TheBlackHack in particular. Characters are a bit more robust, but not ridiculously pampered
#dnd #FiveTorchesDeep #WorldsWithoutNumber #theblackhack
I really like the mechanics behind #TheBlackHack but I'm here because of the way it's written and sort of it's game philosophy
Roll under makes sense to attach stakes personally to each character
It abstracts strict turns and times just by language, but in that language provides a lot of freedom
The idea of Powerful Foe /demands/ transparency when running antagonists for it to work. I love that
Backgrounds and their advantages incentivize us to talk about why the advantage is granted
I had #TheBlackHack in my backlog and after reading #TheMechaHack I felt like checking it. I was familiar with 1e but 2e is so damn beautiful. It's great layout design. Mechanically I haven't really found anything I don't like, or anything I haven't seen used elsewhere, but seeing it all together just fits
If you are worried abou the Usage Dice, for ammo and such you just roll at the end of the encounter
I'd like a short campaign of this. Maybe 8 sessions enough to get a couple levels
