Enjoying vacation life with an exceptional Malbec and my first real free time in ages to read a fantasy book y’all recommended, #TheBladeItself. The roaring of the waterfall is creating the perfect background noise and the shade offsets the temperature.

As a #Malazan fan, I was underwhelmed by #TheBladeItself the first time I read it
After filling the gap with non-Malazan books before going back to it, The Blade Itself is a really fantastic read.

The author is from the UK, and could have benefitted from an editor's oversight for giving one of the antagonist groups the name of a major North American Indigenous Tribe, The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation. The treatment and characterization of a disabled character is handled as skillfully as could be expected in a work set in a harsh time, much as the treatment of a little person is handled in A Song of Ice and Fire.

In particular, each is given a fish-out-of-water story as they encounter each other in a personally unfamiliar location, such as outlander in the big city. The parallel construction was masterfully done.

The author has studied, in particular, A Song of Ice and Fire, and relies on the archetypes established in that work and its predecessors. Not a bad thing--this is genre fiction, after all--and his skill in characterization and narrative makes it work.

A skillfully-written, fast-reading, character-driven example of the genre. Each chapter has a title, and for good reason: they can each be read as (almost) standalone short stories. I particularly liked intertwined journeys of the major characters, told in just about alternate chapters, as they get closer to the kickoff of their quest. /1

They should teach #TheBladeItself’s chapter “Fencing Practice” in writing classes for how to write a meet cute.

If I were making the movie of #JoeAbercrombie’s #TheBladeItself, 1990’s #SuziePlakson would be Ardee West.

I finished book one earlier this year, and started book two in December but haven’t finished it yet.

Not a whole lot to say here. These are some of the most popular books in #fantasy. I get the broad appeal, and I’m enjoying them. They’re polished and easy to get into. But they’re also a little bland.

I mean, that’s what I was looking for, something extremely low-effort but rewarding. So… success?

I've heard it mentioned that #TheBladeItself is #JoeAbercrombie 's weakest novel and I have to say, if this is his weakest novel I'm excited to read the rest of his #FirstLaw books. @bookstodon #bookstodon #fantasy #grimdark @LordGrimdark
