#GreatAlbums1990s - #TheBluetones – #ExpectingToFly (1996). This hit UK No.1 at the height of Britpop then promptly disappeared off the map, which is a shame because as “proper songs” go, the writing here is as close as any UK 90s band got to an actual revival of British Invasion tropes. The playing is jangly and taut (backed, for once, by a competent rhythm section), and refreshingly free of Smiths/ Bowie knockoffs. Qualifies as a lost classic.
