Thurston is de zoon van een muziekprofressor en krijgt thuis muziek met de paplepel ingegoten.
Op de universiteit rolt hij, in 1976, in de #punk en #newwave muziekscene van NYC.
In 1980 gaat hij samen wonen met zijn vriendin #KimGordon die hij dat jaar ontmoet op een optreden van #TheCoachman, waarvan hij deel uitmaakt samen met illustrator #JDking.
Hij ontmoet tijdens die optredens ook #LeeRonaldo van de band #TheFlucts.
