2/3/1959, 22 yo Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper & Ritchie Valens, aged 17, died in a crash shortly after take-off in Clear Lake, IA, the pilot of the single-engined Beechcraft Bonanza plane was also killed. Holly hired the plane after heating problems developed on his tour bus.

Dit bedoel ik: wat een geweldige tekst. Je ziet het zo voor je. En inderdaad: geschreven door J.P. Richardson: "the Big Bopper".

Jape en Johnny waren vrienden. Nadat Jape Johnny hoorde zingen in een club bood hij hem dit lied aan.
Na Jape's dood kwam het uit en het werd een grote hit.

Voordat hij zijn artiestennaam in "the Big Bopper" veranderde bracht J.P. Richardson muziek uit onder een verbastering van zijn initialen: Jape Richardson.

Helaas heeft bijna iedereen na het noodlottige ongeluk alleen "Chantilly Lace" onthouden. Jape was echter ook een goed tekstschrijver die helaas te vroeg is overleden.

The only surviving poster from "the day the music died," a.k.a. the gig that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper were trying to get to when their plane crashed, sold at auction for $447,000.
