A new post at TheSupercargo. I'm reading Jonathan Raban's Passage to Juneau and Emily St John Mandel's The Glass Hotel in tandem and finding points in common between these two widely different books.

Kicking off here a thread of fave books I read this year. Some published in 2022, others earlier. One. #TheGlassHotel by #EmilyStJohnMandel, after loving #stationeleven. Both books explore (among other things) what happens when we lose our material wealth. What the Glass Hotel also explores is the morality of wealth acquisition - it is based, in part, on a famous Ponzi scheme that went belly up during the GFC. Mandel is a connoisseur of the #literarythriller - her writing is tense and lush, the worlds she creates intoxicating.

#EmilyStJohnMandel doing what she does best setting up mysteries. Spooky scenes that feel slightly wrong. She did it in #TheGlassHotel as well.

Next to #SeaOfTranquility by #EmilyStJohnMandel because it's pretty much the second book. Even if you can both books read as standalones they are heavily interwoven.

Finished this small escape into the "kingdom of money" (Mandel, 2020) with a bunch of people appearing and returning. Being corrupt and morally ambiguous. So that's my praise for #EmilyStJohnMandel which got me through three days of quarantine with #TheGlassHotel.

"A secretary is a keeper of secrets" (Mandel, 2020, p.270). #TheGlassHotel #EmilyStJohnMandel #bookquote

"It's possible to both know and not know something" (Mandel, 2020, p. 223) is a returning theme here. It's the stuff you technically know but deliberately forget. It's the ToDo List Task you forget about. I'm not sure but it seems that this scheme is a setup for failure.

"He didn't insist on a detailed explanation. One of our signature flaws as a species: we will risk almost anything to avoid looking stupid" (Mandel, 2020, p.206). We as a species really need to overcome this and I'm as guilty in doing it than most people. High praise to the rest.

The counterlife and the whole scene with the doctor reminds me of the last shot of #inception (just a little bit but it's unsettlinging nonetheleth)

What's up with yellow in this novel? "Across the street, a yellow Lamborghini shone in the haze of the afternoon" (Mandel, 2020, p. 91). First the yellow leather gloves and now that. Something is definitly up.

"What kept her in the kingdom was the previously unimaginable condition of not having to think about money, because that's what money gives you: the freedom to stop thinking about money" (Mandel, 2020, p.90). Me being neither really poor nor rich trying to understand both worlds.

"Very few people who go to the wilderness actually want to experience the wilderness. Almost no one" (Mandel, 2020, p. 35).
The moment I think about books like #IntoTheWild by J. Krakauer and #TheTerrorsofIceandDarkness by C. Ransmayr. Because that seems to be the sad truth.

"He hung back on the sidewalk for a few minutes when he saw this, worried that perhaps it would turn out to be a goth club [...] but the bouncer barely seemed to notice him and the crowd was only about 50 percent vampires" (Mandel, 2020, p. 7).
