In 1946 Juliet Ashton, a young author, visits a literary society on the Island of Guernsey, planning to write an article for the London Times about the importance of reading.

Juliet finds members of the society are reluctant to be written about, or to talk about the disappearance of one of their members.
As she picks at the scab of what seems to be a rather large wound, hoping to solve a mystery, we see flashbacks to the recent period of German Occupation of the island.

A well-made, loving, intriguing story, with a great slice of social-history thrown in for good measure.
